This month, June, at the Goddess Gathering we celebrate the beautiful archetypal image of the mermaid, the siren. The siren was originally a ghost who had functioned as an emissary to both worlds, the living and the dead. The Greeks interpreted the siren as a bird woman with early paintings depicting her in an uncommon form. The shift from powerful and other bird-woman like creature to mermaid was gradual and was competed in the Middle Ages. Today, the mermaid represents a woman who is at ease in the great waters of life and the deep waters of emotion and sexuality. She is a powerful woman unto herself!
