I started this when my son was in kindergarten (now he's in COLLEGE 😳) and it worked so well for him and for the teacher to know that he always had a safe snack to reach for during the day.
Yes, there was still sadness when fun birthday treats were brought in or food-based activities popped up - but this did make a huge difference.

🩵GAME PLAN WITH YOUR CHILD🩵
Meds are secured, the teacher is on board, but don't forget to talk to your child about the day to day at school with food allergy. If this isn't year one, this is just reminders on how to speak up, where their meds will be, how to navigate different situations.
Ask your student what about having food allergies was tough and what was good during the last school year. Let them guide the conversation so that they feel prepared and confident.

Early connections allow more time to ask question and seek solutions (if needed) before time is rushed and the first day of school arrives. Teachers often have (a little) more time to think and plan while their classroom is empty.
This is also a great time to see if their room is stocked with an ALEIA Project Allergy Aware Classroom Kit! If it is, you know that they are prepared with tools to help them navigate the school year as a food allergy aware classroom!

Unless you have a standing appointment with your pediatrician or allergist, this stuff can sneak up on you! It's important to have documentation updated and medication ordered so that you have current meds to hand off to school personnel..and for self-carry and at home.
Interested in having your child self-carry their medication at school? Both of my kiddos did this starting in Kindergarten as it is your/their right based on MN Statute 121A.2205 and 121A.2207.

As you prepare your child for college it's good to remind them that others need to know about their allergy and what to do in an emergency in case they need them. However, it's also important to know what emergency procedures the University as a whole as in place.
As my son and I were touring a college, they talked about campus security, safety, etc and I happened to ask how long it would take for an ambulance to get to campus if someone needed it. They said it would take close to 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive, but in the dead of winter when things are really snowed in, sometimes they can't even get to campus at all! The answer shocked me and made the decision for us right there.

Finding out what documentation you need in order to apply for accommodations and especially when it needs to be submitted is crucial.
For example, the deadline to accept admission to the college my son was strongly considering was May 1st, however, the deadline for special housing accommodations was March 1st. So in order to have a better chance of getting the housing style/location we desired, we needed to accept admission and submit all paperwork 2 months earlier than the general population.

In our experience, the Disability Services/Academic Support Office works to coordinate between departments to help determine the best housing, dining hall, and support services coordinate for the student.
You will most likely need to communicate with each department separately, but they should have access to the student's information in order to help them the best way they can to support them while they are at school.
It's a good idea to connect with each of the departments individually to get an idea of how communication is handled and what accommodations are available.

As your child is headed off to college or beginning to research where they'd like to go, it is important to start conversations early to find out what you need to prepare and who you need to be communicating with at the college.
Asking a broad question like this one, even at a college visit, gives you the opportunity to get a real feel for how they handle food allergies on their campus and allows you to get insights directly from students on staff outside of the Disability Services department which often gives a real-life account of how things are handled and what the day to day on campus truly operates.
When we started touring colleges with my son, I had a list of food allergy related questions and chose which ones were appropriate for the location we were touring and who we were talking to - this always gave me great feedback and helped us to make a plan on what and with whom to investigate further.
