Don't forget to include a little community service in the holiday weekend πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Join Surfrider and Park Point Community Club for a beach cleanup on July 5th. After the holiday festivities, there can be a lot of litter left on the beach, particularly plastic waste that doesn't biodegrade. Help us keep our shoreline and Lake Superior clean. See you there! Please RSVP via the link in our bio.

We are so grateful to have Randy as part of our surfing community and Surfrider team. And great timing on the story given that today is International Surfing Day! 🌊

🌊 πŸ„β€β™‚οΈ He's taught generations to ride waves and has watched the surf scene change and grow ... Not on the warm Hawaiian waters of Waikiki.

Randy Carlson is the surfing coordinator at the University of Minnesota Duluth, helping students chase the waves on frigid Lake Superior. πŸ„ He started the surf program at UMD in 1990. Mostly, Carlson is out teaching students in the fall and early winter when Lake Superior waves really start to turn on.

In a Q&A with Minnesota Conservation Volunteer magazine, Carlson said the biggest reward of running the surf program is "getting people oriented to exploring the unknown, taking risks, and being positive even when you're struggling," real life lessons we could all use.
