Northland Adaptive Recreation offers adaptive recreation programs for people with disabilities

If you have a disability and are looking for some sporting or outdoor adventure, look no further. We offer quality recreational opportunities for youth and adults with physical disabilities, including sensory impairments and autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

NAR had a fantastic time participating in Never Surrender’s Kolar Toyota ALS Fishing Tournament this past Saturday🎣 It was a great day on the water, surrounded by good company and supporting an incredible cause.

Thank you to Never Surrender and all the volunteers that made it possible for us to get out on water and be part of such a meaningful day!

✨ Staff Spotlight ✨

About a year ago, NAR had some staff changes, and while some of you may already know us, we wanted to take a moment to reintroduce ourselves. First up is one of our Program Coordinators and Specialists Alec Kadlec!

Alec Joined northland Adaptive Recreation in 2025 as a program specialist. Before that he worked with the Adaptive Sports Center of Crested Butte as a full-time instructor focused on adaptive mountain biking and climbing and Voyageur Outward Bound School as a wilderness instructor leading canoeing and dogsledding expeditions. A native Minnesotan, Alec moved to Duluth in 2014 for college, graduating from UMD’s Mechanical Engineering program. Duluth was where he fell in love with the outdoors when he began mountain biking and camping, as well as volunteering with NAR in cycling, archery, and skiing and for Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores building mountain biking and multi-use trails. Outside of work he is most often found on a bicycle or Nordic skis, frequently carrying camping gear or racing ultra-distance events.

Alec will be the coordinator for our cycling, kayaking & mountain bike programs this summer!

After years of being told what her son Johnny would never be able to do, Alina Galligan took a chance on adaptive archery—and discovered a community where he could truly belong.

Through Northland Adaptive Recreation, Johnny found joy, connection, and a sense of pride, transforming not only his abilities but how his family sees his future.

What began as a single activity became something much greater: renewed hope, possibility, and a place where Johnny can simply be a kid.

On Monday Alec, was able to present at the National Outdoor Recreation Conference by

NAR and other organizations presented on the process and impact of adaptive cycling infrastructure and programming, showing other advocates, trail stewards, and land managers, what makes our community special.

This past winter we were hitting the slopes, chasing fresh tracks, and making unforgettable memories. Thank you Coloplast for your generous support of our ski program. Your contribution helps make these opportunities possible and truly makes a difference.
Twin Ports youth and adults of all abilities were able to build skills and confidence while having fun out on the ski hill this season. On behalf of the participants, the families, and the 100+ local volunteer ski and snowboard instructors we say, Thank You for the memories you supported in making this season

Huge thank you to everyone who came out for Bulldogs Give Back last week! With your help, we cleaned up the beach and boardwalk at the UMD Boatshed and got everything ready for paddling season. 🌊🚣‍♂️
