Join AIA Northern Minnesota and CSI Twin Ports on Wednesday, April 15, at 10:00 am–12:00 pm at LHB in Duluth for a continuing education session presented by Eric R. Heiberg Esq. of Heley, Dunan & Melander PLLP.

In this program, attendees will learn the basic ethical rules which apply to licensed design professionals and apply those rules to hypothetical situations. We will focus on Minnesota and Wisconsin, but these ethical rules mirror the codes of conduct in most states. Actual ethical situations which design professionals face in modern practice will be presented such as multi-jurisdictional practice, departures of certifiers, conflicts of interest, plan certification, ethical marketing, and licensing compliance.

Cost
AIA members $40
Non-members $50

Join AIA Northern Minnesota for a project tour (1.0 AIA LU) and social on Thursday, November 13! Register for this free event now: https://www.aia-mn.org/event/infinite-facade-the-next-generation-of-building-facades/

• 3:30-4:30 pm – CEU/Tour at The Lakeview at 333 (333 E. Superior St.). This presentation is approved for 1.0 AIA LU.

• 4:30-5:30 pm – Social at Sir Benedicts Tavern on the Lake (805 E Superior St). Appetizers to be purchased by AIA Northern Minnesota. Beverages to be purchased on your own.

In a presentation and walkthrough hosted by Jace Rossow ( Regional Facades Manager), we will learn about the Infinite Façade system by Wells and tour some of the beautiful Lakeview at 333 E. Superior building that is opening this fall.

Infinite Facade™ redefines how owners and design teams approach the facade system. It is a single source solution for a complete building envelope that meets or exceeds code requirements, utilizes a standard frame and connections, while giving design teams complete flexibility.

Research has shown that the building envelope is one of the most complex aspects of design and reasonably so, as design teams are expected to meet client and aesthetic expectations while meeting performance standards and regulations. Infinite Facade™ solves these issues.

Zenith Duluth Central High School Adaptive Reuse + Historic Preservation

From Classroom to Keys: Level 4 Change of Occupancy & Historic Credits at Duluth’s Zenith DCHS

This field course examines the adaptive reuse of Duluth’s Historic Old Central High School (1892) into Zenith DCHS, a 160,000-SF, 122-unit apartment community. Attendees will learn how the team selected and executed a Level 4 change of occupancy path under the 2020 Minnesota Conservation Code for Existing Buildings (MNEBC), coordinating structural, egress, fire/life safety, and accessibility upgrades while preserving character-defining features. The course demystifies the federal 20% Rehabilitation Tax Credit and the Minnesota 20% state HTC (reinstated and extended to 2030), sequencing approvals with local landmark/HPC reviews and building permits. We’ll connect code choices to real construction details (corridors, stair towers, smoke/compartmentation strategies, acoustics, unit planning within historic grids) and quantify how HTC compliance influenced scope decisions, budget, and schedule. The tour closes with lessons learned and a Q&A on entitlement risk, documentation, and common HTC pitfalls.

Reception to follow hosted by AWH Architects in conjunction with Doors Open Duluth. Refreshments will be served. Please stay for an exciting networking event.
