With this cold air this morning, it’s a reminder to us on what is coming our way. The great Minnesota freeze….
Checking heat tapes, water lines and sewer lines for proper working heat tapes, insulated water lines and properly sloped sewer lines.
Doing this now before the freezing temperatures will help save headaches from frozen lines and save money from high cold weather labor pricing.
-Check to make sure heat tapes are plugged in and working. Even if there is a light on the plug end, you will want to feel the heat tape to ensure that it is warm. It will not be super hot but more of a warm feeling.
-Make sure that all of the water line from water meter is covered with insulation or pipe wrapping. Water meter must be wrapped with heat tape and insulation as well.
- Sewer lines should have a 1/4 bubble slop downhill to the main sewer drop in the ground. You may also want to wrap the sewer line to help with freezing if you have a lot of bends in you lines.
** Other important things to check!**
- Do you know where your water shut off is? All main water shut off are before your water meter under the home. Some may have a water shut off by the water heater on the incoming water supply line. If you do not have an inside water shut off in your home we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you have one installed. This will save on the amount of water leaking if you have an internal water leak. Saving on repairs and cost.
- Run and check your furnace, clean filters and check the battery in your thermostat if you have a digital thermostat.

Doing these checks and preparing your home from winter could mean the difference from an enjoyable cost friendly winter and a large repair bill and headaches.
