Duluth XC Ski Club Promoting Health, Fun and Fitness through Cross Country Skiing!

The Duluth Cross-Country Ski Club was founded in 2004 to promote and support cross-country skiing in the city of Duluth. Since that time we have been a strong advocate for cross-country skiing, garnering resources to develop, improve, maintain and groom the local ski trails. By developing youth programs to teach children to ski and provide training for high school athletes, we have introduced XC s

kiing to hundreds of youth and encouraged them to continue this life-long sport. We also provide training and technique workshops for adults, as well as opportunities to socialize with other skiers. DXC has taken on an ambitious set of projects to advance skiing in the Duluth area, including:
• Developing and grooming the trails at Spirit Mountain
• Working with the City of Duluth to implement the Cross-Country Ski Trail Master Plan over time
• Creating plans for new ski trails in the St. Louis River corridor in West Duluth
• Reopening the Lester-Amity Chalet as a community building that will serve the adjacent ski trails

Our third Junior Nationals Scholarship highlight story of the season comes from Cadel Pohl, a local athlete that skies for Denfeld Highschool. Enjoy her story below!

"I had an amazing time at Junior Nationals this year. It was easily one of the most fun and unforgettable experiences I have had for skiing. This is definitely a trip I will never forget not only because of the friendships I made, but also because of the sicknesses I overcame. I was very excited to be competing at this level, but ended up getting sick with the flu and pneumonia. Despite being sick, I found ways to still enjoy the experience. I enjoyed cheering for teammates, and meeting new people. Since I wasn't at my best physically during that week, the friendships and memories I made with my teammates made me remember that Junior Nationals was way more than results. At one of my races, I wasn't feeling my best. It was a mass start, and even before the race I knew it wasn't going to be good. Throughout the race, I dropped straight to the back of the pack. I found one girl from the Pacific Northwest Ski team. We weren't feeling the best so we finished the race together. That is a memory I will always keep in my heart. Junior Nationals can be either fun or bad;, it's just about how you decided to spend and the people you share it with."

Well said. Congratulations on an amazing season. DXC looks forward to watching Cadel race and continue to develop in future seasons!

Meet our newest board member, Eric Hansen! Enjoy his bio below:
"My wife and I relocated to Duluth from Anchorage, Alaska a few years ago and quickly felt at home here along Lake Superior. I appreciate the wide breadth of activities this area has to offer and have enjoyed getting to know the local trails and nordic ski areas surrounding us. This last winter my dog Cooper and I have begun Skijoring, and while we are both learning the technique, it's been a fun new way to embrace winter. I have a background in facilities and operations, and currently work as a Maintenance Manager at Essentia Health. I'm happy to see what I can bring to DXC and find new ways to put down roots in the Northland"

DXC is looking for 1-2 new board members. Reach out to [email protected]

Spots are still available for the Chester Bowl Youth Summer Camp, hosted out of the Lester-Amity Chalet during renovations!! Register today to reserve your spot, and find out all the details below from Executive Director, Dave Schaeffer.

"With a major expansion and renovation of the Thom Storm Chalet happening in Chester Park this summer, we knew we needed a new summer camp site for the year. Our summer camp promise to parents is to return their child “tired, happy, and dirty” at the end of the day every day, so we knew we needed to find a place with close proximity to woods, water, and an ability to find freedom outside. Lester Amity is the perfect place, and we are so grateful that we are able to rent the Lester Amity Chalet for our summer camp!

Our day camp is for those who have just finished Kindergarten through Sixth grades, and offers full day care (8-5) Mondays through Thursdays. Our program model is primarily nature play (with fort building being a favorite), with group games, arts and crafts, and hiking adventures and field trips being featured prominently. Campers can be signed up for one week, all ten weeks, or anywhere in between, and the cost is just $210 per week.

This is our first time running camp outside of Chester Park, and we couldn’t think of a better place to be. We do still have limited availability at Lester Amity. If this feels like a fun activity for your school-age kid, we hope you sign them up for camp! You can find out all the details and register at https://www.chesterbowl.org/summer-camp/ "
