Thank you to everyone who attended the August River Revival event all about cattails at the Superior Public Library on Thursday, August 20. Participants learned about the different species of cattail in the estuary from plant ecologist Kelly Beaster, how they are affecting wetland ecosystems like Allouez Bay from Area of Concern Coordinator Matt Steiger, and also used their creativity to make cattail mats with local hobbyist Katie Schmitz.

We’re heading back to the 44th Ave E waterfront this Monday, and we’d like you to join us.

Over the past few months, community members have shared ideas about what they would like to see at this future public waterfront space. Stantec has used that feedback to develop the first preliminary design concepts for the site. On Monday, August 24 from 5-6:30 p.m., you’ll get to see those concepts and tell us what you think.

What works? What’s missing? What would make this a place you and your family would actually use? What should we be thinking about before the design moves forward?

Meet us at 44th Ave E Dock in Superior. Come ready to look, learn, teach, and share your perspective. Your feedback will help inform the next phase of design.

Didn’t make it to our June Walk & Talk at the 44th Ave E Dock? You haven’t missed your chance to be involved. We’re returning to the waterfront on Monday, August 24 from 5-6:30 p.m. for a Community Design Workshop and everyone is welcome.

Stantec will share early design concepts based on what we’ve heard from the community so far. Then we’ll spend time talking together about what people like, what they would change, and what matters most for the future of this public waterfront space.

Join us on Monday, August 24 from 5–6:30 p.m. at 44th Ave E Dock in Superior.

The workshop will be held under a tent with tables and chairs. The entrance gate will also be open so participants with accessibility needs can drive closer to the workshop area.

Our next River Revival (this THURSDAY) will include a fun, family-friendly cattail weaving activity as we learn more about Allouez Bay and the wetlands of the St. Louis River Estuary!

Katie Schmidtz will lead participants in a hands-on weaving activity using locally harvested cattails. It’s a chance for kids and adults alike to get creative while learning more about a plant we see throughout our local wetlands.

We’ll also hear from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and plant ecologist Kelly Beaster about why coastal wetlands are so important, how invasive and hybrid cattails are changing Allouez Bay, and the restoration work underway to improve habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Join us on Thursday, August 20 from 5–6:30 p.m. (food served at 4:30) at the Superior Public Library. Free and open to all ages, with sandwiches and snacks provided. No weaving experience needed—just come ready to learn, create, and have some fun!

What could the 44th Ave E waterfront become?

A place to walk along the river? Launch a canoe? Watch wildlife? Fish? This spring, community members shared ideas for how the former Bunge Dock could become a welcoming public space along the St. Louis River.

Now, we’re taking the next step.

Join us Monday, August 24 from 5–6:30 p.m. at the 44th Ave E Dock in Superior to explore preliminary concepts developed by Stantec and help shape what comes next.

We’ll look at different possibilities for the site, hear what you like and what you’d change, and continue the conversation about how this waterfront can best serve the community.

Not all cattails are the same. The St. Louis River Estuary is home to native broad-leaved cattails, invasive narrow-leaved cattails, and hybrids of the two. Once you know what to look for, you can start noticing the differences.

Native broad-leaved cattails generally have wider leaves and little or no gap between the upper and lower portions of the flower spike. They also tend to grow alongside a variety of other wetland plants.

Narrow-leaved cattails have slimmer leaves and usually have a noticeable gap in the flower spike. They can grow in much denser stands.

Hybrid cattails can be especially vigorous, growing tall and dense enough to crowd out other wetland vegetation.

Why does that matter? A wetland with a variety of plants creates very different habitat than one dominated almost entirely by cattails. Join us on Thursday, August 20 from 5-6:30 p.m. (food served at 4:30 p.m. at the Superior Public Library to learn how to tell these cattails apart, what their presence can tell us about a wetland, and what restoration work is underway in Allouez Bay.

This spring, we asked people to think big about the future of the 44th Ave E waterfront (Bunge Dock). Now we’re ready to show you where some of those ideas have led.

On August 24, Stantec will share preliminary concepts developed from community input gathered through the public survey and June Walk & Talk.

This isn’t a presentation of a finished plan. It’s another opportunity to sit down together, look at the possibilities, and talk about what works, what might be missing, and what should be carried forward.

THANK YOU to all the volunteers who helped at the Wisconsin Point Bird Sanctuary on Thursday August 6th, Friday August 7th, and Monday August 10th. We bagged up over five 20 gallon bags including spotted knapweed, leafy spurge, and pigweed. We also managed the entire shoreline from woody debris, clearing the foraging path for next seasons shorebirds. This would would not be possible without the help of many!

From Area of Concern to an Area of Celebration: A Community Cruise on the Vista Star
FREE AND OPEN TO ALL!

For nearly four decades, people across our region have worked together to clean up and restore the St. Louis River Estuary. On Tuesday, September 1, we’re taking an evening to celebrate just how far the river has come—and the community that helped make it possible.

Join the St. Louis River Alliance and Area of Concern Coordinators aboard the Vista Star for a two-hour cruise through the harbor. Along the way, we’ll visit completed and ongoing restoration sites and share some of the stories behind this remarkable cleanup effort.

The cruise runs from 5:30–7:30 p.m., with boarding beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Vista Star, 323 Harbor Drive in Duluth. The event is free and open to all ages, and a light dinner will be provided. Space is limited and advance registration is required.
