Last week, our youth participants at North Star Academy had the opportunity to make yogurt parfaits with Duluth Whole Foods Co-op!

Thank you to Whole Foods Co-op for teaching our participants about healthy eating and helping them create a delicious snack. Experiences like these make learning both fun and memorable, and we appreciate your partnership in making nutrition education fun and engaging.

The Harbor Highlands Youth Program has been very busy this month! While we were closed a few days to support initiatives throughout our YMCA community, our staff has remained committed to creating meaningful and engaging opportunities for our youth.

We are excited for what this summer will bring as we continue planning active, engaging programming focused on growth, connection, and making a positive impact in our community.

The Harbor Highlands youth recently partnered with KEY Zone, Duluth, MN to support Animal Allies through a community donation effort. We love finding meaningful ways to support our local community!

The youth in our programs are making hands-on impacts every single week by delivering food to elders in our community, collecting supplies for animals in need, and participating in service projects that help make Duluth a stronger, more connected place. Through leadership, kindness, and community involvement, these young people continue to show what it means to care for others and giveback.

Thank you to Derek Nicholas for visiting our Homecroft KEY Zone site and sharing Indigenous food and cultural knowledge with our youth participants!

Derek, also known as Niigaanibines, is the founder of Wiisinig LLC, a social enterprise focused on practicing and revitalizing Indigenous food and knowledge systems among Tribal communities. Through his work, Derek teaches how Indigenous food systems are deeply connected to Anishinaabeg lifeways and how reconnecting with these traditions can help restore relationships with the Earth and one another.

We are grateful for the opportunity our participants had to learn through hands-on, land-based education and meaningful cultural teachings. As Derek shared, “When we all begin to connect with the Earth and restore relationships to all the life around us, we become better stewards, and our future begins to look more promising.”

Thank you again for spending time with our youth!
