Miigwech to Minnesota North College's (Vermilion) Northern Fisheries class for joining 1854's Resource Management and Education/Outreach staff on Shagawa Lake Wednesday evening for an electrofishing demonstration. Year class sampling and mark recapture surveys are important tools in maintaining a healthy fishery in our inland waters. Mr. Miller has some smart cookies this semester - they had some great questions for 1854 staffers! We look forward to seeing your employment applications in future years 😉

The 1854 Treaty Authority is offering programs to social studies and history classes of the schools within the 1854 Ceded Territory. Students will be exposed to Tribal sovereignty, Indigenous life ways, settler history, American Indian policy and history, and usufractuary rights, while learning of how our organization came to be. Best suited for middle school as they cover "the land changing hands" in chapter 6 of their Northern Lights history book. Please allow 1 hour, for an in-person PowerPoint presentation.

Name/sturgeon release this afternoon out in Brookston. The sturgeon traveled by truck to Brookston and will make there way to Grand Portage by truck this evening. Michele got to release two little ones. Heart moment!

On September 30, we recognize the signing of the 1854 Treaty.

Signed at Mooningwanekaaning (La Pointe, WI), the 1854 Treaty established permanent homelands for the Lake Superior and Mississippi River Bands of Ojibwe in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. These permanent homelands are commonly referred to as reservations.

Ojibwe treaty negotiators also—once again—insisted on maintaining hunting, fishing, and gathering rights upon the lands and waters ceded to the United States.
Today, we are reminded that treaties are living agreements that continue to shape the rights, responsibilities, and relationships between Tribal Nations and the United States.
