The Local 538 executive board and its members want to give a huge thanks for the individuals involved in passing our recent contract. If you are not aware, policing nationwide has struggled with recruiting and retention. The Duluth Police Department has experienced those aches and pains and has tried to be as creative as possible to recruit and retain the best. Our city administration acknowledged the hardship our officers go through day in and day out. We are grateful for the hard work, meaningful conversations and adaptability the city brought to the table. Without this team effort our department would not be the same. We are grateful to have come to an agreement and look forward to bettering the department and the community at large.

Yesterday we lost another member of our Law Enforcement family to a senseless act of violence. Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell was courageously responding to a shooting when a coward took his life. While new into his career, Officer Mitchell knew what he had to do. Having already placed the lives of the innocent before his in the past he knew what to do. He ran towards the threat while others ran away. Just like all Law Enforcement would do.

We cannot imagine what Officer Mitchell’s family, friends, and partners are going through right now. Know that Officer Mitchell was doing a heroic task when he lost his life.

We are sick and tired of this violence against Law Enforcement. Assaults on Police Officers continue to rise. We constantly ask ourselves when will this end? Why are we the only ones that seem to truly care about the level of violence in our communities? Why doesn’t the silent majority speak up to affect change? Why do politicians pretend to care yet pass bills that only harm us, and the public, yet protect the criminals?

We are sad, angry and beyond frustrated.

We are often asked by the public how they can help support us. We know the majority does and we have generous people in our community showing support every day. We see you and appreciate you.

One way to show support is to consider donating to Officer Mitchell’s family using the QR code below. This is the official donation platform. These donations will let Officer Mitchell’s family take the time they need to grieve their hero.

Rest easy brother.

Thank you,

-Duluth Police Local 538

Today, we sent our Duluth Police Honor Guard and several members of the Duluth Police Union down to a funeral to honor the lives of the Burnsville heroes Paul Elmstrand, Matthew Ruge, and Adam Finseth. There will be thousands in attendance today to honor the sacrifice that these three men made. While we do not have all the facts of what occurred that day, we can with certainty say that these three are heroes for the actions. Laying their lives to protect the incident and mend the injured.

To the family and friends of these men, we express our condolences. While we understand that no words, actions, or thoughts can bring them back, I hope that you look at the extent of community support today and recognize that they are indeed heroes, and your community recognizes that. To those unfamiliar with theirs actions on Feb. 18th, please educate yourself to understand, and appreciate their heroic actions.

And lastly, let us not forget the actions of Adam Medlicott, and the rest of the Officers that responded that day. While some injuries may heal, others will live with them forever. To our brothers and sisters in Burnsville, take care of each other and know that we at the Duluth Police Department honor and mourn for your losses.
