The North Shore Striders (NSS) running club started in 1968 and included legendary Duluthian Garry Bjorklund, a 1976 10,000 meter Olympian and two-time Grandma's Marathon Champion. The NSS organized many recreational running events and provided a community for area runners. In August 1976, the NSS decided to host an official marathon along the north shore of Lake Superior. On June 25, 1977 Grandma's Marathon was born, forever rooting the NSS's legacy in the upper Midwest. After a 23-year hiatus, the North Shore Striders is being revived by an 11-person board of directors and funding for three years from Grandma's Marathon - Duluth, Inc. The new NSS will offer runners and fitness enthusiasts of all ages the following benefits:
- Discounted entry fees into many upper Midwest races (specific races to be announced)
- Frequent group runs/walks for members
- Youth programs for ages 18 and under
- News and updates from the local, regional and national running world
- Social functions, celebrity speaking events and educational opportunities for members only
