Yesterday, a few of our guests found a cramped, hot carrier with a mama cat and her six kittens abandoned down the block. Knowing where to go for care, they brought them to The Mission. πŸ’™

We are very grateful for our guests who stopped to make sure this sweet little family got to safety. We were able to get them cool, hydrated, and transported to the animal shelter for the care they needed. 🐾

What makes your Fridays fun?? For us, its our friends over at Voyageur Donuts - Canal Park! 🍩

Twice a week, they gift us their leftover gourmet pastries for our meals. These little treats go a long way toward making our guests’ day just a little sweeter.

Thank you - from the bottom of our hearts (and our stomachs)! πŸ˜‹

Today, we want to acknowledge our friends at Benedictine Monastery of Duluth, MN for the work they do for our community here at The Mission.

Each week, a table of dedicated volunteers joins our dining hall to offer repairs and alterations to our guests, often bringing along these travel-sized sewing kits for us to hand out as well.

This service provides new life to clothes that would otherwise be thrown out and replaced, which is not always an option for our community.

Thank you, friends, for being here for our neighbors in need. πŸ’™

A message from our Executive Director, Katie Hagglund:

Yesterday's enforcement activity by the Duluth Police Department and its partners represents an important step in protecting some of our community's most vulnerable neighbors. I want to sincerely thank DPD for their proactive partnership and their continued willingness to work alongside us as we navigate the very real challenges surrounding our Mission.

Over the past several months, I've met regularly with Duluth Police Department leadership to discuss the increasing exploitation of our guests by individuals seeking to sell illicit drugs around our building. A majority of the names included in today's press release are not Union Gospel Mission guests. Rather, they are individuals who choose to spend time around our property because they know many of the people we serve are battling addiction, working hard to stay sober, or simply trying to access a meal, housing support, or other essential services.

I also want to acknowledge an important reality: addiction is a disease, not a moral failure. Across Minnesota, treatment resources remain in incredibly high demand, and many people who are ready for help struggle to access it. Even after successfully completing treatment, many are discharged back into homelessness because there simply isn't enough housing available. Recovery is difficult enough without having to start over on the streets.

That is why our commitment has never changed. Our doors will always be open to people seeking help. Whether someone is taking their first step toward recovery, returning after a relapse, or simply trying to survive another day, they deserve compassion, dignity, and hope.

What I cannot accept is allowing those who seek to profit from addiction to prey on people who are working so hard to rebuild their lives.

Union Gospel Mission exists to serve our neighbors in need. We are here for those who are struggling. We are not a safe place for individuals who come here to exploit our most vulnerable guests.

Thank you again to the Duluth Police Department for yesterday's efforts and for their continued partnership in helping make our Mission and our surrounding neighborhood safer for everyone.
