ASD honors Juneteenth as a national holiday and we want to do our part in spreading knowledge of its importance ♥️

Juneteenth is the day marked as the celebration of the freeing of people who were enslaved following the American Civil War. The date, June 19th, is the arrival date of Union Soldiers in Galveston, Texas to announce such in 1865.

The holiday, also called Liberation Day and the Nation's 2nd Independence Day, has been celebrated ever since in a variety of ways across the country.

Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday on June 17th, 2021, though many states acknowledged Juneteenth as a state holiday before this date, including Virginia which began official observation of Juneteenth Freedom Day in 2017, and Tennessee which began official observation of Juneteenth in 2020.

Nosh. Nibble. Taste…of Damascus 🧑‍🍳 Join ASD on Saturday, August 15th, from 1 to 4:30 pm for a fun day in the Damascus Town Park while you enjoy ‘taste’ portions from 5 of your favorite Damascus restaurants 😋

When you buy tickets, you’re supporting local chefs, their establishments, and of course, local farmers! Wash it all down with adult beverages for purchase from The Damascus Brewery and Appalachian Heritage Distillery & Brewery 🍺 Plus, ticket purchasers also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite dish!

Our friends at The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail will be there too, with great performances by local musicians, Raistlin Brabson & Margo MacSweeney, and Sandy Shortridge 🎶

We had a great day and an informative tour at Sequatchie Cove Farm, in southeast Tennessee, last month. Kelsey Keener discussed how trees and woodlands fit into their pastured poultry and grass-fed lamb operations.

Bill Keener stepped in to share about their sh*ttake program and we even got to witness their daily egg-washing ritual - a family activity! Thanks so much to everyone at the farm for making it happen, and for the tour attendees for their enthusiasm and questions. We look forward to seeing more farms in this part of the state!

Thanks to Will and Maggie Bowling for hosting a great tour of their farm! 🌱🐄

We saw both a woodland thinning area as well as new plantings, including three different approaches to tree protection that they have tried over the years. We were able to discuss lessons learned in-depth, observe the effects of high deer pressure, and had an engaging conversation on woodland conversion and reclamation for grazing, using small ruminants.

Will also shared how his riparian buffer plantings have been extremely valuable for his farm during the major floods that have occurred over the last several years. We really enjoyed showcasing this excellent farm! 😄
