New Volunteer Organization Launched to Support Dubuque Parks
DUBUQUE, Iowa (June 5, 2026) — A new community-driven nonprofit, Friends of Dubuque Parks, has officially launched with a goal of advocacy, volunteer coordination, fundraising and support of Dubuque parks. Founded by community members passionate about preserving and improving local parks, the organization is led by co‑chairs Laura Roussell and Colleen McKenna.
“Many communities across the country have similar Friends of Parks groups and they have been very successful partnerships. The Dubuque group was started in response to citizen requests and as part of the city’s new Parks Master Plan,” said Co-chair Laura Roussell. “I am excited about this group because it gives our residents an opportunity to be involved in enjoying our parks and enhancing what is available for our residents.”
Friends of Dubuque Parks will work closely with the city. “This is an exciting chance to build relationships with the community, while enhancing our service through Parks and Recreation,” said Matt Kalcevich, Dubuque Parks and Recreation Director. “We look forward to the ways we can work together to promote new opportunities and increase access through this tremendous partnership.”
“Public servants are the unsung heroes of our community, and the City of Dubuque has designed an inspiring, ambitious comprehensive parks master plan. However, limited staffing and funding mean they can’t do it alone. They need our help to bring this vision to life,” said Co-chair Colleen McKenna. “To build the vibrant community we all want, Dubuquers need to roll up their sleeves and actively shape our city’s future. We invite everyone to join our volunteer and fundraising efforts to elevate our parks and enhance the quality of life for all residents.”
Friends of Dubuque Parks seeks to include representation from across the community. They meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 pm at Bread of Life Presbyterian Church in Dubuque. Anyone interested in joining the organization can connect through the group’s page at Friends of Dubuque Parks.
The organization will host a kickoff volunteer event, a park cleanup at Eagle Point Park, on June 27, helping to prepare the grounds for the community’s July 4th celebrations. The next volunteer project will be a post‑RAGBRAI clean‑up at A.Y. McDonald Park on July 26. Community members are encouraged to sign up for volunteer opportunities at www.volunteerdbq.com. A dedicated website is currently in development at www.friendsofdbqparks.com and will be available soon. To learn more, visit the Friends of Dubuque Parks page.
