As we head into the next grant cycle opportunity, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque for supporting Opening Doors through a Community Impact Grant focused on Barrier Breakers for Childcare & Transportation.

Women experiencing homelessness face complex challenges that extend far beyond the need for shelter. At Opening Doors, we witness daily how lack of affordable childcare and reliable transportation are two of the most urgent and persistent barriers preventing women from achieving long-term stability.

Without transportation support like bus passes, gas cards, and taxi vouchers, many residents struggle to maintain employment, attend medical or mental health appointments, access treatment services, or secure permanent housing. Childcare barriers can be just as overwhelming, often preventing women from working, attending school, or taking the next step toward independence.

This funding helps remove barriers, restore opportunity, and create pathways toward healing, hope, and home. Thank you for investing in women and children in our community.

This year, Opening Doors had the incredible opportunity to expand our partnership with Hillcrest Family Services by bringing onsite support services directly to our residents through Jaime Oler-Harrop.

One of our locations now has a dedicated office space for a support partner to be onsite each week, creating easier, more immediate access to care and resources for the women we serve.

This partnership is helping remove common barriers that often prevent individuals from accessing support, especially transportation challenges. By bringing services directly into our programs, residents are able to receive consistent care in a familiar, safe, and supportive environment.

The impact goes far beyond convenience. This collaboration strengthens both mental and physical wellness support for residents, increases accessibility to services, and provides additional guidance and partnership for our staff as they continue walking alongside women on their journey toward healing, hope, and home.

We are incredibly grateful for community partnerships like Hillcrest Family Services that continue to invest in innovative, person-centered support for women and families in our community. Welcome to the family, Jamie!

Resident Win!

We’re so proud to celebrate April, who officially became a licensed CNA and is continuing her education toward her LPN degree!

April’s journey has been one of incredible resilience, perseverance, and courage. Over the years, she has faced significant challenges, including addiction, setbacks, and housing instability. But through every obstacle, she continued choosing hope and choosing to keep moving forward.

After returning to Teresa Shelter, April recommitted herself to rebuilding her life through sobriety, education, budgeting, therapy, and self-care. Day by day, she put in the hard work to create a stronger future for herself.

Today, she is thriving in the program, pursuing her goals, and proving that healing and growth are possible with support, determination, and community.

Congratulations, April, we are cheering you on every step of the way!

Yesterday, our community showed up in a powerful way for Opening Doors during Great Give Day, and we are incredibly grateful!

Because of your generosity through “Give Where You Live,” we ended the day with $6,575 raised, exceeding our goal to provide critical support for women and their children experiencing homelessness and crisis in our community.

These funds will directly help provide essential needs many of our residents cannot afford when entering our programs- including over-the-counter medications and bus passes. While these items may seem small, they make a tremendous impact. They help women stay healthy, get to work, attend appointments, access childcare, continue treatment services, and keep moving forward on their journey toward stability.

To every donor, advocate, volunteer, and supporter who shared, gave, and stands beside our mission, thank YOU. Your compassion creates pathways toward healing, hope, and home and we couldn’t do it without your support ❤️
