Take action against 2 deadly bills in the Iowa Legislature.
HF 2718: This is called “The Anti-Red Flag Law” by the legislators who sponsored it. It has been passed in the House, so we are interested in convincing Senators to vote NO.
Background: Many states have enacted Extreme Risk Protective Orders (ERPOs), also called Red Flag laws. When a person is in crisis and is considering harming themselves or others, family members and law enforcement are often the first to see the warning signs. These laws allow family members or law enforcement to intervene by petitioning a court for an order to temporarily prevent someone in crisis from accessing guns. HF 2718 would make this impossible in Iowa.
Talking points:
Red Flag Laws can de-escalate emergencies by taking guns out of the equation in dangerous situations.
Red Flag Laws allow a judge to temporarily remove a person’s access to guns when there is evidence that they pose a serious risk. These laws also provide due process protections that meet the standards set by the Supreme Court.
Research shows that su***de was averted in about one in ten gun removal cases in Connecticut, while Indiana saw a 7.5% reduction in its firearm su***de rate following enactment of ERPO legislation.

SF 2274: This bill would repeal Iowa’s prohibition of “bump stocks”, and other similar rapid fire devices. It has been passed in the Iowa Senate, so we are interested in convincing members of the Iowa House of Representatives to vote NO.
Background: Bump stocks and similar devices make it easy to convert semi-automatic fi****ms into illegal machine guns in a matter of minutes. Iowa prohibited bump stocks on March 26, 2019, following a federal regulation change by the ATF that classified them as illegal machine guns. This nationwide ban made it illegal to possess, sell, or manufacture bump stocks in Iowa and across the country. The Trump administration initiated the federal ban in December 2018 in response to the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, in which the shooter used bump stocks to fire over 1,000 rounds in 11 minutes, killing 60 and injuring over 850. In June 2024, the US Supreme Court overturned this federal ban.
Talking points:
Fully automatic machine guns- those that fire bullets in rapid succession with a single pull of the trigger- have been tightly regulated under federal law since the 1930s. It’s reasonable that devices that can transform a firearm into a machine gun should also be prohibited.
Although the federal ban has been lifted, at least 18 states have specific laws prohibiting bump stocks.
There are no reasonable citizen applications for machine guns, nor for devices that can turn semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic machine guns.
