Girls Who Hike Virginia Education. Connection. Empowerment. Girls Who Hike Virginia is on a mission to help women+ in VA. Today, we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

We started as a Facebook Group, connecting women with one another to enjoy Virginia's trails together. We aim to provide women+ with the education, resources and tools they need to enjoy the outdoors as well as volunteer opportunities to support our local parks. Girls Who Hike was originally envisioned to support women's outdoor endeavors. Today, we build on the namesake tradition of empowering women while also working to actively center inclusion and access – issues important to the group's very foundation. As such, our community is a safe place for the experiences of women+, including trans women and individuals who identify as non binary, gender non-conforming, and anyone who identifies as a woman in a way that is important to them.

We 🩵 our public lands! Today Girls Who Hike Virginia volunteers joined a larger effort led by Potomac Conservancy to clean up Turkey Run Park in honor of National Public Lands Day. Public lands provide vital habitats for wildlife, preserve natural beauty, and offer amazing places to recreate.

Every effort helps, whether it’s bringing supplies to pick up trash on your next hike, telling a friend about Leave No Trace, or attending organized events like these.

If you want more opportunities to care for them while also making new friends, we offer regular Adopt-a-Trail volunteer events in partnership with Virginia State Parks. Use the link in our bio to join our group and see upcoming dates!

There is often no one “right” way to do things (except for the last slide 😉). While there’s nothing wrong with being fastest or having all the latest gear, it also doesn’t make you more of a hiker than anyone else. The outdoors is big enough for all of us to celebrate — no matter how we got there.

Today marks the first day of Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈 Including women+ who are trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, or identify as a woman in any way that is meaningful to them has always been a core tenant of our group. Everyone deserves to feel safe, welcomed, and respected when showing up as their authentic self — on trail AND off. Happy Pride! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Can you guess what we learned today?

The importance of planning and preparation before even hitting the trail, the ten essentials, what quality gear can look like, ’s hiking clothes treatment program—we even learned the American Sign Language signs for bear, turtle, and snake!

After our lesson we explored the trails at and used an app to identify plants along the way. 🌱 A perfect way to spend a Sunday morning!
