Girls Who Hike Virginia

Girls Who Hike Virginia Education. Connection. Empowerment. Girls Who Hike Virginia is on a mission to help women+ in VA. Today, we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

We started as a Facebook Group, connecting women with one another to enjoy Virginia's trails together. We aim to provide women+ with the education, resources and tools they need to enjoy the outdoors as well as volunteer opportunities to support our local parks. Girls Who Hike was originally envisioned to support women's outdoor endeavors. Today, we build on the namesake tradition of empowering wo

men while also working to actively center inclusion and access – issues important to the group's very foundation. As such, our community is a safe place for the experiences of women+, including trans women and individuals who identify as non binary, gender non-conforming, and anyone who identifies as a woman in a way that is important to them.

Well… winter has certainly made itself comfortable! ❄️ Between last week’s ice and snow, trail conditions have been a little unpredictable. But we are still exited to hike together this month when it’s safe to gather and explore together.

Swipe to see upcoming hikes on the calendar.
Please be sure to check the hike event pages for any updates or changes, and always use your best judgment out there. We love getting outside, but safety always comes first.

Bonus points for orange or yellow blazed trails 😅 Sometimes the right way is hard to spot with a thick layer of leaves on the ground. Apps that show your location on maps can help keep you on course. If you’re hiking in , download the Avenza app for free offline map access.

You can now snag a photo with Claytor Lake using the newly installed selfie post at the overlook! A group of Girls Who Hike Virginia volunteers completed this project as part of our Adopt-A-Trail efforts in Claytor Lake State Park.

Claytor Lake was created in 1939 through the damming of the New River by the Appalachian Power Company. It spans 4,500 acres. The lakefront is a great place to spot a variety of birds, including osprey and bald eagles.

Have you been to this park yet?

We’ve adopted six trails across ! 🎉

Our state parks bring us so much joy, and we’re glad to give back to them. The group pictured above performed trail maintenance on the North Ridge Trail in Sky Meadows State Park.

Keep an eye out for Girls Who Hike Virginia Adopt-A-Trail signs in state parks near you! New opportunities to volunteer are continually posted in our Facebook group (see link in bio for more info about joining our group).
