Save the Teton River Canyons

Save the Teton River Canyons Working together to protect the Teton River Canyons for people, water, and wildlife.

The Save the Teton River Canyons Coalition is a group of fly fishing-related businesses, landowners, and conservation groups who are working to raise awareness about the Canyons of the Teton River. We recognize that water is a vital necessity for people, crops, fish, and wildlife. We believe that eastern Idaho’s water needs can be met without rebuilding Teton Dam, in a way that makes economic sens

e and protects a way of life that includes fishing, hunting, and farming. Our goals are to pro-actively generate public awareness and interest in the Teton River Canyons, and to help influence decision-makers to consider alternatives to rebuilding Teton Dam. Through this project, we will are inviting YOU to help us tell the story of the Teton River Canyon, its history, and the humans and wildlife that use it.

Check out this new short film about the Teton River, where 50 years ago, the Teton Dam collapsed in one of the worst engineering failures in U.S. history. The river and those who depend on it have made a remarkable comeback since that disaster, but some are now calling for the Teton Dam to be rebuilt.

With new research indicating a lack a connectivity for Yellowstone cutthroat trout downstream and upstream of the Felt Dam, the need to modify or remove the dam during the ongoing relicensing process is greater than ever. The good news is the dam can be modified or removed without impacting power generation at the project.

Conservation advocates are seeking improved fish mobility features for the Felt Dam — or removal of the dam altogether — for the wellbeing of native fish, including Yellowstone cutthroat trout.

A new poll commissioned by American Rivers found that 83% of eastern Idaho voters support some form of long-term protection for the Teton River Canyon, and 84% of voters support long-term protection for its major tributaries including Bitch, Badger and Canyon creeks. Hopefully, the BLM will take this into account when it updates its resource management plan (RMP) later this year.
