Wild Spirit Wild Places

Wild Spirit Wild Places Wild Spirit Wild Places seeks to protect Texas’ diminishing ranches and rangelands through education, research, and
conservation practices.

Wild Spirit Wild Places is a non-profit established by Desert Door distillery. Desert Door sources all of the sotol used to create its distilled spirit in the beautiful West Texas desert. We founded Wild Spirt Wild Places because we’re passionate about preserving these untamed, awesome expanses of land. Today, the wide-open spaces that are the hallmark of Texas are under threat from increased land

development and fragmentation of generational ranch lands. Wild Spirit Wild Places exists to protect these dwindling ranch lands and rangelands. Our motivation is simple — we don’t want to be the generation that sat idly by while our wild places disappeared. Links:

The Golden-cheeked Warbler is the Texas Hill Country’s most beloved songbird and one of its most endangered. 🐦

Every spring, these tiny Texans return to nest here, navigating thousands of miles to reach our Ashe juniper and oak woodlands.

Along with other threats, bright outdoor lights at night can throw them off course and put them in danger.

You can make their journeys easier by turning off unnecessary outdoor lights from 11 PM to 6 AM during migration.

Small action, big impact for Texas birds.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at The Rackhouse At Desert Door for our monthly meeting for beekeepers and friends of the bees last night. We were thrilled to have a packed house with great opportunities for learning and networking.

Such an informative presentation by our featured speaker, Nathalie B. Founder of Bee Mindful, LLC.

Many thanks to Ray Ray's Food Truck for the awesome chicken and waffles and to Desert Door for the fabulous sotol cocktails!

Our club meets from 5:30-8:00pm on the 2nd Thursday of every month at The Rackhouse at Desert Door Distillery in Driftwood. We are also planning to include some meetings in Wimberley this year.

Feel free to reach out with questions or to volunteer as a worker bee 🐝

Happy National Bird Day! Especially to:

🦉 The owl that judges your lawn care
🐦‍⬛ The grackle that owns the parking lot
🦅 The hawk that made you pull over in awe
😡 The hummingbird running entirely on rage

Protecting wild places means protecting the creatures who were here first.

Winter is the toughest season for birds.

Colder temperatures, fewer insects, and increased habitat loss make it hard for birds to survive. Here’s how you can help your backyard buddies get through it…

Fill Your Feeders - Feeding birds in winter helps them survive when natural resources disappear. Check out for recommendations.

Plant Winter-Fruiting Plants - Yaupon holly, beautyberry, and cedar elm are some native options that help birds stay nourished and protected.

Provide shelter - Bird houses, dense shrubs, evergreen trees, and brush piles are easy options you can add to your backyard.

Even a small effort can make a big difference. What actions have you taken to help the birds this year?

🍁 Winter is well on its way so it’s time to make your yard a safe haven for wildlife!

Try taking some of these actions to help pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects survive the cold months…

🍂 Leave fallen leaves where they are to provide shelter and natural mulch

🌱 Plant native perennials that will bloom again in spring

🌾 Keep some dead stems and seed heads for birds and pollinators

🪵 Add brush piles or logs for small creatures to hide in

✂️ Skip heavy pruning late in the season to protect habitats

How do you plan to make you backyard a winter sanctuary?

It’s that time again the night sky over Texas is basically bird rush hour. 🕊️✨

Millions of travelers are winging it south, and they need clear skies (not glowing backyards). So if it shines, glows, twinkles, or beams, flip that switch off from 11 PM to 6 AM!

Do it for the birds. Do it for the stars. Do it because darkness never looked so good. 🌙

Fall migration is here 🌌 from August 15 to November 30, it’s time to go Lights Out Texas. From 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., switch off non-essential lights to keep our night flyers on course. Your dark skies make a big difference for millions of migrating birds.
