On this day in 1965 the Voting Rights Act was passed. Please honor those who fought so hard for it, including many in Drew and the Mississippi Delta, with your vote in November.

If you are registered, and even if you've been voting for years, it's important to check that you're still on the precinct voter list. A surprising number of long-time voters have been kicked off the list, and the attempt to purge the list continues so check several times over the next few months. Great news for the Lil Red Schoolhouse in Drew! Funding from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund will support rehabilitation of the historic cafeteria to provide a visitors' center for local and nearby civil rights sites.

The Schoolhouse - known also as the Drew Rosenwald School - was built in 1929 as part of the Washington-Rosenwald School program, established by Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald, which sought to provide Black children with access to public education in the South. In 1954, after Brown v. Board of Education required the integration of public schools, the white community of Drew defied the Supreme Court's decision and constructed a cafeteria at Drew Rosenwald School in hopes that creating an "equal" facility would prevent its integration with local white schools. The building functioned as a school until the 1980s when falling enrollment forced it to close. We2Gether Creating Change plans to install a Civil Rights marker at the school site.
