Muskingum Multisports Statement addressing the Zane Trace Commemoration 5k/10k Cancellation.

I am writing to address the cancellation of this morning’s Zane Trace Commemoration 5k/10k and to clear up any misinformation regarding the event.

The race was canceled due to a lack of preparation and support from the event organizers, not Muskingum Multisports (MMS). Our contract clearly defines the responsibilities of the event timer versus those of the event organizer and race director. These expectations were reinforced through multiple emails and phone calls leading up to the event.

MMS arrived at the venue at 5:15 AM and was fully prepared 45 minutes before registration was set to open. At 6:00 AM, we contacted the Race Director (RD) and were told another organization was responsible for Race Day logistics—information that contradicted all prior communications. I insisted the RD come to the venue to attempt to salvage the event. Although the RD and a few volunteers arrived at 6:30 AM, it became clear by 7:00 AM that they could not adequately mark the course or secure enough safety personnel. Due to these significant safety concerns, the decision was made to cancel the race. While the organizers left shortly after, MMS and a representative from the local running club remained until 7:45 AM to inform arriving runners.

In 10 years and hundreds of timed events, I have never experienced a situation like this morning. Any Event organizer or Race Director that we have worked with knows our passion and commitment to upholding our end of any event we are part of. Any runner who has ever participated in an event or group run with the Zanesville Run club also knows their passion for the running community. This is not how either of us operate!

To the 100+ runners I the Timer spoke with this morning, I truly apologize for your frustration and for how this was handled. This should never happen in our running community.
