Meet Melissa Smith, our Wasatch North Community Lead. đź’ś

Melissa was born in Argentina and immigrated to Utah with her family at age seven. She and her husband are now raising a bilingual, bicultural family in Layton, Utah. She studied Communication at Weber State University and has a diverse professional background spanning the legal, banking, and global corporate events industries.

Melissa is passionate about immigration reform, public health, women’s health, and international affairs, and believes deeply in building stronger, healthier, and more welcoming communities. Outside of her advocacy and professional work, she loves reading fiction, traveling the world, cooking and eating great food, binge-watching a good show, and spending time outdoors with her family.

Meet Jessica! 💜 I’ve been working at MWEG this summer with some Utah Common Ground projects, but wanted to get more involved with this awesome group of ladies! It’s not what I would have imagined for myself as a kid, but if I could work in civic engagement for the rest of my life, I would be thrilled. It’s spaces like MWEG and the inspiring women in my life who made me realize this kind of work was even possible for me. I also love stories, and do book editing. I moved to Logan for school, and when I graduated from USU with a degree in human development, I decided to stick around. But I’ve lived all over the country (Alabama, Ohio, Missouri, Nevada, and Utah). My current favorite food might be Karie Anne’s gelati just because it’s been so hot and it’s conveniently within walking distance (too convenient probably). I love to read, and though it’s really hard to choose, my current favorite book is probably The Shippers by Katherine Center. It’s a perfect summer read!

Up next is Emily Bastian, our Wasatch South Community Lead.

Emily lives in Springville. She graduated from BYU with an English Education degree and currently substitutes teaches. She is the mother of 3 and loves being in the schools with her children - substitute teaching and serving on boards for both School Community Council and PTA. Emily enjoys gardening, pickleball, riding her e-bike, scrapbooking, cross-stitching, and watching TV.

Our goal in introducing you to all of these great women is to show you that they are just normal women like you. They have jobs, kids, hobbies, and serve in their communities. They aren’t all political science majors who read hours of news and follow every bill in Congress. We are just interested in helping our communities with the time we have. Does that seem like something you could try?

We ended our Summer School with a big bash! We ate pie, viewed the Tiny Art Show Gallery, packaged back-to-school hygiene kits for Utah Refugee Connection, and listened to honor roll speakers from each of our advocacy areas. We loved gathering and celebrating with you all this summer.

Don’t worry, we still have plenty of activities ahead. We have a lunch chat, a voter prep party, and a film screening in the coming months. Be sure to find us on MWEG Central so you can stay up to date on events near you!

What a summer MWEG Utah has had. We didn’t let the 250th birthday pass by without celebrating in every way. We walked, learned, gathered, ate, watched, and created all across Utah in tons of events from backyard BBQs to statewide trainings. Thank you to all the 300+ women who joined in our Utah Summer School Events. We have been edified and educated and are going into this fall ready to carry the message of proactive peacemaking. 👊🏻❤️🤍💙

Join your Utah State Directors, the Director of Civic Engagement, and a member of Utah’s Advocacy Team for our monthly lunch chat! This is a casual online meet-up where we can chat all things Utah and prep for upcoming elections.

These lunch chats are for everyone: whether you’re at work, on a lunch walk, or wrangling a toddler, we hope you bring your sandwiches and sit down with a few questions about preparing to vote. We’ll talk about how you can be prepared, and about MWEG’s voter prep parties.
