Hi all,

I just got a message from Emily at the Big Thompson Watershed Coalition. She is excited to report that the USFS will be sending folks up to cut dead and dying trees along Storm Mountain Drive next week on the stretch of federal land along the road. Their target is anything at risk of falling into the road and blocking access. They'll likely get started this coming Monday, May 18th but heads up for all next week when coming up and down the road, and maybe anticipate a few minutes delay. They expect the whole operation to only take a day or two.

This is great news for us and fire safety.

Something to consider attending if you have large animals.

Something to consider attending if you have large animals.

If you've ever tried to transport livestock during a disaster, you know it's not necessarily easy. That's why LCSO and members of our Larimer County Sheriff's Posse are hosting a Large Animal Evacuation and Preparedness event to talk evacuation planning, readiness, routes, and more.

📅 Friday, May 8
🕞 6:30-8:00 p.m.
📍 The Ranch (McKee Building) - 5280 Arena Circle
🐴 Who should attend? Horse and livestock owners, boarding facilities, and anyone responsible for large animal care

It's no secret that we've had an unseasonably warm, dry year with high risk of wildfires already. Our Larimer County community is also no stranger to Mother Nature's wrath, and in times of trouble, we pull together. But we don't have to wait until a disaster strikes - preparedness goes a long way in keeping our families, our animals, and our neighbors safe.

Plan ahead. Act early. Protect what matters.

Hi all,

We will be having our first SWAG meeting of 2026 this Wednesday from 6:00-7:00. You can come in person to Dave and Gail Hoffman place at, 644 Lakeview, in the barn. or via Zoom, link below.

This is our agenda so far:

Matt DeDecker will talk about bringing up a slash dumpster so we can bring slash to it. We will have to man it and have set up times so people don’t dump unacceptable items in there. There will be a $500 deposit to cover anything they have to dispose of. If all is good then they give us the deposit back.
Continuation of the chipping program, but with LFRA doing the mobile chipping. At this time, there is no charge for a community chip day as long as it is Monday-Thursday. Ideally, we have 10-15 property owners wanting to participate.
Any other items anyone wants to talk about.

Our communities “Fab Four” spent their summer helping the community with fire mitigation and made the news.

In another summer marked by fire restrictions and high temperatures in Colorado, a group of Storm Mountain kids took matters into their own hands. Four friends between the ages of 11 and 14 spent their vacation mowing grass, clearing brush, whacking weeds, learning from the fire department, and help...

FYI, Fire Restrictions Extended to the end of the month.

https://www.larimer.gov/spotlights/2025/09/2/larimer-county-extends-current-fire-restrictions

On recommendation by the Larimer County Sheriff, the Board of Larimer County Commissioners at their regular Administrative Matters meeting today voted 3-0 to extend the current fire restrictions adopted on Aug. 7, 2025 in unincorporated Larimer County until Sept. 30, 2025.
Even with recent wet weather, the danger of wildfire, forest, and grass fires remains elevated, with above-normal temperatures, lightning strikes, and windy, dry conditions.
As of 12 p.m., Sept. 2, 2025, restrictions on open fires for the unincorporated portions of Larimer County remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 30, 2025. Also in effect are restrictions on the use of fireworks, combustible devices, public firework displays and incendiary devices. This is NOT a fire ban.
This restriction is in only in effect for unincorporated Larimer County over 6,000 feet. In order to address fire risk while still accounting for different climate areas, Larimer County has implemented a zoned approach to restrictions. The county is divided into three zones: below 6,000 feet; 6,000–9,000 feet; and above 9,000 feet. View a real-time, interactive map of the restriction area here: https://aegis.larimer.gov/

We were lucky enough to receive a $500 grant from Fire Adapted Colorado this year for our Storm Mountain Screening Initiative. It allowed us to purchase stainless steel mesh screen to cover areas where embers might be able to reach and start a fire.

We promoted the initiative through our GOSWAG.org website, social media, email and the creation on our sign and float for our communities 4th of July parade and pot luck. We had a sign-up table and conversed with neighbors on the importance of the program and fire mitigation. Our float even took 3rd Place!

Below are pictures of delivering the screen to neighbors, determining plans of action, and some process and finished projects.

We are grateful for FACO's grant and the opportunity to help our community become for fire adapted.

We are also grateful for those who participated and all the volunteers to helped promote and make this program happen.
