Heritage Conservancy is hiring a Vice President of Conservation.

Since 1958, we've protected over 17,000 acres of open space, farmland, wildlife habitat, and watershed land in Bucks County and the surrounding region. Our emerging Strategic Plan calls for protecting land faster and at a larger scale, and for doing more to support other organizations' conservation efforts. This role will lead both.

Reporting to the President & CEO, the VP of Conservation oversees our land protection, easement stewardship, and property stewardship programs, along with a team of 10+. The work includes setting land protection priorities, overseeing major easement and fee transactions, and representing the Conservancy with municipalities, counties, state agencies, and partners like WeConservePA.

An unused school lawn in Bristol Township is now home to a state endangered wildflower.

With guidance from Heritage Conservancy, Bristol Township School District stopped mowing the lawn and kept just a walking path. It quickly grew into a meadow full of birds, bumblebees, and Rhexia mariana, also known as meadow beauty, a plant our staff had never seen in Pennsylvania before.

What's blooming at our Russell-Mandel pollinator meadow, and why is it important? 🌸🦋

Goldenrod, mountain mint, smooth blue aster, and New England aster are blooming across the meadow right now, just as most other plants have wrapped up for the year and gone to seed. These late bloomers keep bees and other pollinators fed through September, and for migrating monarchs, meadows like this are important refueling stops on the long trip to Mexico.

We're honored to be featured in River Towns Magazine's piece on the return of the American chestnut tree.

Since 2002, Heritage Conservancy has partnered with local Boy Scouts and the Cooks Creek Watershed Association to grow a hybrid chestnut orchard at our Fuller-Pursell Preserve, part of The American Chestnut Foundation breeding program. Thank you to our own Jim Drennan for sharing his insight, and to River Towns Magazine for the feature.

We're proud to be part of this important restoration effort.

Efforts are underway in the River Towns to restore the chestnut tree to its glory years of the early twentieth century, when it helped define Eastern forests before being decimated by blight.

We still have some spots left for our Butterfly Bonanza event!

Grab a net and help us catch butterflies as Heritage Conservancy's community scientists, led by our Senior Conservation Biologist Tyler, survey the species found right here in our region. You'll get hands-on experience while learning to spot and identify local butterflies.

Stick around from 2:40 to 3:00pm for a monarch tagging demonstration, where Tyler will show how tagging helps researchers track their fall migration and gather important data.

Family-friendly activities for naturalists of all ages will be happening throughout the event.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Fuller-Pursell Preserve for a drizzly Sunday morning event exploring the world above and below the forest floor. We were amazed by how many mushroom species we found, a great reminder of how much life is thriving beneath our feet.

A special thank you to local mycologist Luke Smithson for revealing the fascinating fungal networks that keep our forests healthy, and our Conservation Biologist Sebastian Harris for sharing his expertise on our native tree species.

Buckingham Township is hosting an evening on local meadows, and our own Tyler Kovacs will be speaking on the topic.

The discussion will cover the features of a meadow, the history of meadow landscapes in Bucks County, native plants and wildflowers, habitat for pollinators and wildlife, and the role meadows play in healthier watersheds and local biodiversity.
