A well-deserved honor for our own Shannon Fredebaugh-Siller!

On May 14, our Director of Education and Community Programs was recognized with an award from the Bucks County Intermediate Unit during a MWEE teacher training we facilitate with them at Nockamixon.

The award honored her selfless commitment to the students and programs of the Bucks County IU, and anyone who has worked alongside Shannon knows just how true that is!

(For the curious: a MWEE, or Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience, connects students to their local waterways through hands-on field learning. This event was a teacher training, where educators learned the skills to bring those experiences back to their own classrooms. Shannon helps make days like these happen.)

Congratulations, Shannon. We're lucky to have you. 👏

Our Conservation Biologist Sebastian carefully demonstrates the proper way to handle a snapping turtle - this is one of the snappers we caught during our turtle survey at our preserve.

After taking measurements and collecting data, it’s back to the water where it belongs.

Snapping turtles look intimidating, but they play an important role in healthy ecosystems. If you ever spot one in the wild, the best thing you can do is leave it alone and leave the handling to people with experience. These turtles have a seriously powerful bite, and their neck can reach surprisingly far back!

Enjoy a lovely summer evening outside while watching bats emerge to start finding their dinner! Along the way, we’ll also touch on nearby conservation stories, including the Durham Bat Mine and its role in supporting local bat populations. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for the outdoor portion of the program.

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢
Our region is home to some truly remarkable turtle species, and our conservation biologist Sebastian Harris has spent a lot of time getting to know them up close on our preserves. Here are six of our favorites.

Pennsylvania's natural areas are disappearing faster than most people realize, and turtles, which are slow to mature and deeply tied to specific habitats, don't bounce back easily from those losses. Supporting local land trusts and conservation organizations is one of the most direct ways to help.

In the meantime, get outside and explore. You might just cross paths with one of them!
