🌟Member Monday🌟 "I learned about Bucks Beautiful via another member, Susan Sandor, and loved how she talked about her passion for the organization. I didn’t know about your organization but looked at your website and found that you do such nice things to keep our area inviting. Not having a green thumb or even a slightly green thumb, I wanted to support those who do what I can’t. I have been with State Farm 30 years so I know insurance…good to know your strengths and weaknesses." - Christina Jones, State Farm Insurance Agent https://www.myinslady.com/

We're thankful for the endorsement of local business owners such as Christina.

Over the last several years, support and enthusiasm for youth gardening has expanded at an exciting rate. Bucks Beautiful is thrilled to be part of this movement and has created the Bulbs for Bucks school daffodil plantings to introduce kids to gardening. This program allows students to participate in a hands-on activity to beautify their school grounds while learning and growing together.

This year, we were thrilled to collaborate with our first school in upper Bucks County, M.M. Seylar Elementary- PSD in Pennridge School District. Principal Miles Roe led the Kindergarten through 5th graders with enthusiasm!

A nice bonus was that our Financial Director, Susan Carr, is a former student of M.M. Seylar. She was filled with joy to work with the students and assisted with the hand planting.

🦇 Bats get a bad rap, however they are quite beneficial to our ecosystem!

🦇Some bat species eat an incredible number of night-flying insects including mosquitoes. They can eat as many as 1,200 insects in an hour of feeding!

🦇Other bats are critical pollinators of seeds and fruits that we eat.

🦇Fruit-eating bats are very important for the dispersal of seeds.

🦇Bat droppings (guano) are a very effective fertilizer and when collected responsibly it can have a very positive effect on local economies.

Did you know that our RePlant Bucks program has a goal of planting 10,000 trees in the County? Why do we think it’s so important to counter tree canopy loss?

🌳 TREES FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE
Trees absorb carbon dioxide, removing and storing the carbon and releasing oxygen back into the air.

🌳 TREES CLEAN THE AIR AND HELP YOU BREATHE
Trees absorb CO2, as well as odors and pollutants. It’s estimated that one tree can absorb nearly 10 pounds of polluted air each year and release 260 pounds of oxygen.

🌳 TREES PREVENT SOIL EROSION AND RAINWATER RUNOFF
During heavy rains, water runoff finds its way to streams, lakes and wetlands, creating the potential for flooding. It also picks up and carries pollutants along the way. The EPA and the Center for Watershed Protection are recognizing the importance of trees in managing runoff. Leaf canopies help buffer the falling rain and their roots hold the soil in place, encouraging the water to seep into the ground rather than run off.

🌳 PROVIDING HABITAT
Trees provide food, shelter, and nesting sites for many animals and insects, which helps maintain biodiversity

🎃 Carving pumpkins this weekend? If you plan to cut a hole in the top to scoop out its guts, don’t. Leaving the stem intact helps a jack-o’-lantern last. Instead, cut a hole in the bottom or on the back.

🎃 If you choose to paint a pumpkin instead of carving, use a non-toxic or natural paint that won't harm animals if ingested. Or choose to keep your painted pumpkins inside, then dispose of them properly.

🎃 Refrain from "washing" pumpkins in chemicals to preserve them. Pumpkins will decompose- there's no stopping it. Just let it happen naturally and keep wildlife safe.

🕸 When decorating outdoors, avoid faux spider webs, where birds, bats and small critters can easily get entangled. This can cause injuries or even death.

Pro tip from our Business Member Carter van D**e Associates: For those with browsing deer issues, now is the time to defend the plants! Here is the Irish Spring option: cut the bars in half or quarter, create a hole with a nail, then push a zip tie (or string) through the pieces. Hang the pieces on your plants or trees, about three feet off the ground.

Just 10 Boxes left! Our daffodil bulb sale raises funds for our Community Grant Program.

The bulbs are perfect for either intimate groupings or for large naturalized plantings. These low maintenance perennials are resistant to deer, rodents and rabbits. Recommendation is to plant 12 bulbs per square foot between October and late November. Blooms will appear early-late Spring.
