Less Zoom, more steps forward in activating the historic theatre district 🎭

Before blockbusters, there was The Telenews at the Arcade Theatre (1941)—a “living newspaper” where world events unfolded in real time. Headlines streamed from a teletype, and a massive lobby map displayed dispatches from around the globe.

Though short-lived, it captured a moment when audiences craved the news—just before the U.S. entered WWII. Today, the theater’s interior is gone, but the marquee still shines on a story worth remembering. ✨

In the 1970s & 80s, Downtown LA’s historic Broadway theaters became cultural lifelines for the Latin community, screening the latest Mexican comedies, dramas, and action films.

What were once grand movie palaces premiering legends like Charlie Chaplin transformed into vibrant spaces of language, culture, and connection. ❤️

Today, many of these icons sit dark: but they don’t have to. Check out our Theater Fest initiative to learn more!
