PATTERN PATTERN is a growth accelerator for Indy’s creative economy. Working on Season 3!

PATTERN is a cultural and economic development 501c3 organization that exists to create, catalyze, and connect communities of creatives in Indianapolis and in the Midwest. From a small group of fashion enthusiasts, PATTERN has grown into a large community of creatives working to advance their craft and city. Our nonprofit is best-known for its print magazine but its digital publication, internship

& fellowship programs, and events and special programs like St’ArtUp317 and SUPPLY have all contributed to the growth of Indy’s creative class and the city’s vibrancy. Launched in 2010 as an all-volunteer organization, PATTERN’s Executive Director, Board and volunteers have accomplished an impressive amount for a small organization, creating over five millions dollars of direct economic impact. Since our founding we have:

Published 18 issues of Award-winning, internationally distributed PATTERN Magazine

Hosted 150+ events, connecting over 10,000 of Indy’s top creatives, leaders and influencers

Planned and hosted two season of St’ArtUp317, a retail pop-up initiative to bring together landlords with empty storefronts and small brands and artists. These pop-ups have resulted in collective exposure of over 50 participating artists and small business owners to over 500,000 people – citizens and visitors. Promoted and helped bring attention to over 5,000 different cultural events and creative entrepreneurs around Central Indiana through our print & digital magazines and social media channels

Hosted and mentored 90+ interns from all over the state, and beyond

Launched the PATTERN Creative Fellowship Program which has graduated five Fellows, and is currently hosting two Fellows

Launched a Creative Services program which provides our partner clients with creative tools, and, as importantly, generates revenue for our organization while providing hands-on professional development opportunities for our Fellows and interns. Planned and hosted an apparel tradeshow called SUPPLY for local lifestyle and streetwear brands. Over the past three years, the tradeshow has allowed us to showcase 50+ local brands to the general public and provide the brand owners with opportunities for revenue and networking. This year’s event promises to be better than ever with an added educational component. As PATTERN completes ten years of inclusive community-building and economic development work focused on creative entrepreneurship, the organization looks forward to continuing to be a champion of independent local arts and culture.

What part of your business feels most like who you are, and what part feels like what you have to do to keep the whole thing alive?

“The creating and the selling feel most like me. When I can actually sit down and focus and make a design that I’ve been thinking about for weeks, months, and sometimes even years, and I finally get it done, I look at it, get it printed, and can wear it, that feels like a huge release of something I’ve been holding inside for a long time.

The part I hate the most is the paperwork, the business side of things. Trying to keep track of everything, trying to negotiate bills or rates or whatever else. I just can’t stand it. Pitch decks, raising money, it doesn’t feel like me. I know it’s a crucial part of what I’m building. It just feels like it’s turning corporate. But I know it’s inevitable. If I want to scale and grow the business, I have to adopt some corporate mentalities and structure. And that’s the hardest part, figuring out where that fine line is. I’m too artsy for one group and too business-like for another group, and it’s just like, where do I land?” - Rockland Page ()

This past week, we attended the inaugural Story Summit with the and —a powerful gathering centered on sharing the story of Indianapolis’ new chapter through diverse, local voices.

As part of the event, our Executive Director & Co-Founder, , shared a few words on what storytelling means to us—and we were honored to be part of a moment dedicated to amplifying the people who shape this city.

We also had the chance to officially share Volume 28: Speed City with all of you. This issue is a reflection of movement, momentum, and the stories that drive Indianapolis forward—and we couldn’t be more proud of the work behind it.

Thank you to the Indy Chamber and Life in Indy for creating space for these stories, and for inviting us to share what Speed City means to us. This is just the beginning. 🏁

Denise Blane (Denise Blane) didn’t plan to build her filmmaking career in Indiana.

Like many emerging filmmakers, she assumed the path forward meant leaving. Los Angeles. Atlanta. Somewhere with a clearer front door into the industry. But what started as a temporary stop back home turned into something else entirely. A community. A set of relationships. A series of opportunities that didn’t just keep her here, but convinced her to build here.

In just a few years, Blane has moved from production assistant to camera department to director, navigating an industry that rarely offers straight lines. Her work spans commercial sets, documentary storytelling, and now narrative filmmaking, all while carving out space in a market still finding its footing.

Her breakout documentary, Justice 4 Three (Justice4Three ), grounded her in something deeper than craft. It taught her what it means to carry a story, not just tell one.

At 27, Blane is part of a new generation of filmmakers building their careers here, not elsewhere.

“I’m a big believer in showing up. I always loved that quote about success being mostly about just showing up. I’m also a worker. That’s my comfort zone. I’ll put my head down and work.

For a long time I felt insecure that I didn’t express myself in the ‘traditional artist’ way. I don’t paint on weekends. That’s not me. But I’ve leaned into being strategic. I’m very data-driven, especially for a creative. I don’t go off gut feelings alone. I want to know what problem we’re solving. I want the research. I want to know what the audience actually needs.” - Tori Witter ()
