Thank you Representative LaurieBeth Hager for sponsoring the original HB 1491 that would have provided no-cost school meals to ALL ND students! Unfortunately some state senators did not think this was a good idea. As a result of some baller legislative moves, 10,000 ND kids were added to the no-cost school lunch program through another bill. We will keep up the fight!

Fantastic news for North Dakota kids! No-cost school meals – which has had a long journey full of ups and downs – has passed both the ND House & Senate, along with a boost in school funding!!

The original school lunch bill, sponsored by Rep. Laurie Beth Hager, would have provided meals to all kids. The version that passed both chambers today in another bill (SB 2284) provides $6 million for no-cost breakfast and lunch for students from families with incomes of 200% of the federal poverty level (about $60k for a family of four), which is a good start. This will give no-cost meals to an additional 10k kids! SB 2284 is now headed to the governor. In this pic, our school lunch champion LBH is holding a lunch bag decorated by a ND student!

SB 2284 also provides a substantial increase in funding to the per-pupil formula, which are the state funds that support school districts across the state. In my role on the education appropriations committee and the conference committee for SB 2284, I successfully fought for an increase of 4% each year of the upcoming biennium, as well as an increase for special education, to ensure districts can meet the growing needs of our schools.

πŸ—£πŸ—£πŸ—£ YO YO!!! 10,000 more kids get no-cost school meals!!! This is fantastic. We are over the moon excited about this!!! Below is the note from our organizer Andrew from North Dakota AFL-CIO!!!

"We did it!

2284 has cleared both chambers including $6M dollars for school meals! It will now go to Governor Burgum for his signature.
By working together, we made life a little easier for 10,000 North Dakota working families.
This is a major victory for the working people of North Dakota. Thank you for sticking with it and keeping the pressure on the Legislature to do the right thing!
We should all be proud of the work we've done and I can't wait to see what we do together can do next!" πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Thank you "

Thank you Jay Thomas for giving us the platform to elevate our message and for being a champion for this cause!!!

Heartfelt thanks to FARGO FLOORING STORE, FRYIN PAN, and GREAT HARVEST for agreeing to host one of our donation jars so their customers might have the opportunity to give the price of a school lunch...eliminating school lunch debt one business at a time! Please support these generous folks.

I would much rather my taxes be spent on making sure children have something in their stomach.

North Dakota got mentioned in national news. This is NOT what the PEOPLE of North Dakota want!!! Legislatures need to VOTE TO FEED KIDS.

"Though North Dakota, Montana and Virginia have tabled or rejected measures to provide free school meals, policy momentum elsewhere is still in sight."

Some GOP senators voted to increase meal reimbursements for state employees β€” including themselves β€” but against school lunches for poor kids. And legislators gutted Fargo's approval voting.
