One of many things we are working on.

This was only our second week doing this, but can’t wait to see how this progresses!

First time picking fruit at a farm for this guy. 🍓

Sometimes a new activity means leaving not even 5 minutes after arriving because Kai is too overstimulated or uncomfortable. I’ve learned to be very flexible over the years.

Some of the things we considered during this experience to accommodate for Kai:
- Going as early as possible to try and beat the hottest time of the day since it was an outdoors activity.
- Choosing a spot on the tractor trailer that was less crowded, if possible. We even skipped a tractor ride at one point of the day because it was pretty full, and said we’d catch the next one, hoping it was less crowded, and it was.
- Letting Kai have autonomy - I am glad he tried strawberry picking and participated in that activity. When we got to the peach orchard, he chose to sit out the peach picking activity because the sun was too hot.

Mama is a makeup artist, was filming a lip combo in the car while we wait for his speech therapy time, and captured this conversation with Kai on film. ❤️

Kai was completely non-verbal until age 5, and he’s been building his vocabulary since. He’s 12 now. Have we been in speech therapy consistently? No.

Last year, I started going over his daily/weekly schedule with him. It has helped with emotional regulation - I realized not knowing what to expect was frustrating for him. So, I figured out a way to help me tell him - with the use of a calendar off of Amazon and stickers to represent activities (school, soccer, swim, track, doctor’s appointments, etc). Since Kai isn’t fully verbal/conversational, I have to be creative and learn through trial and error when explaining things.

In this conversation, I’m still not sure if he was asking to go out to eat for dinner. He sometimes redirects his request if he thinks the answer will be no. Then, he mentioned wanting TV time. We’re both learning how to communicate — parent and child. I try my best, even on days when I’m exhausted and he’s frustrated because he can’t find the words.

Using a calendar has helped Kai learn the days of the week, anticipate events 1–2 months out, and it has helped with some emotional regulation. He used to get frustrated when he would wake up, and be told he had school that day, or waiting for a trip that wasn’t happening yet, so I found a way to help him understand and mentally prepare for his schedule. He now enjoys having access to see his monthly calendar visually, and I can’t wait to show him this finished DIY calendar! 📅

⚾💙 PLAY BALL with Spectrum! 💙⚾

We're excited to partner with ReClif Community, Matt Olson, and the Gwinnett Stripers to offer an autism-friendly baseball camp at Coolray Field!

As part of MLB's PLAY BALL initiative, this inclusive one-day camp is designed for individuals on the autism spectrum ages 4–25. Participants will enjoy supportive, sensory-considerate baseball stations led by Gwinnett Stripers players and ReClif coaches in a fun and welcoming environment.
