The Save Historic Muny District was created by the 86th Texas Legislature and charged with saving the Lions Municipal Golf Course, “Muny,” for future generations. Muny holds a unique space in the heart and history of Austinites as not only the oldest public golf course in Austin but the first voluntarily integrated public golf course in the South (four years before Brown v. Board of Education)! On the course are many beautiful heritage oak trees whose loss would be a tragedy of history and nature as these centuries-old trees are in danger of being lost forever without being properly revitalized. The Save Historic Muny Board oversees this philanthropist mission of raising enough funds to protect the property from being sold or leased to a developer and potentially erase Muny, its beautiful trees, and its historical legacy. As a public entity, the Board works for the people and is accountable to the public; their efforts are not just for the course but for all of us. On behalf of our community, the District fights to preserve this invaluable space.
