Dear friends,

While all of us have been working to flatten the curve and support those on the frontlines of the coronavirus crisis, the fossil fuel industry has been working feverishly to profit off the pandemic.

They’ve lobbied the EPA to drop all pollution controls. Pushed forward pipelines like Keystone XL. Tried to get out of providing healthcare for sick workers.

Now, fossil fuel companies are lobbying to get a huge chunk of the bailout funds that are meant to go to small businesses across the United States.

Send a message to your Member of Congress today demanding that they oppose all efforts to bail out the fossil fuel industry.

This is a critical moment for us to push back on this Big Oil Bailout.

Industry friendly politicians are already lobbying Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to open up the $500 billion Trump Slush Fund to coal, oil and gas companies. They’re also trying to pass a bill that would use $3 billion that could go to COVID-19 relief to purchase oil for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, even though we’re already facing an oversupply.

These politicians aren’t trying to help workers in the fossil fuel industry. If they were, they’d be supporting universal healthcare, direct relief to working families, and job retraining programs. No, this is all about lining the pockets of their wealthy corporate donors.

Luckily, there are some climate champions in the House and Senate who are fighting back against these polluter handouts. PUT IN INFO ABOUT THE STOP ACT, etc.

Click here to ask your Representative to sign onto these letters and pieces of legislation opposing the Big Oil Bailout.

With over 16 million people out of work, now isn’t the time to be giving handouts to fossil fuel billionaires. If we can generate a large enough public outcry, it will ensure that big polluters aren’t allowed to profit off this pandemic.

Together, we can ensure that we have a just and sustainable recovery to COVID-19. A recovery that helps strengthen our communities and protect our climate.

A recovery that works for people, not polluters.

Thank you,
###

Congress is debating a massive bailout for the fossil fuel industry.
Right now, industry friendly politicians are trying to give massive corporate handouts to coal, oil and gas companies with money that could go to working people.
We can’t allow the fossil fuel industry to profit off this crisis.
Message your member of Congress now to tell them to oppose this Big Oil Bailout and ensure that money goes to people, not polluters.
Sample Message Text
I’m deeply concerned that federal bailout money that could go to working families
will be used for corporate handouts to the fossil fuel industry. I’m calling on you
as a Member of Congress to oppose all fossil fuel industry bailouts and support
legislation to ensure that federal relief goes to people, not polluters.
Specifically, I am asking you to oppose any big oil bailouts.
The last people who deserve taxpayers’ money are fossil fuel billionaires who are attempting to profit off this crisis. The industry has already lobbied the EPA to drop pollution regulations, rammed forward dangerous pipeline projects, tried to get out of providing healthcare for sick workers, and more. Meanwhile, they continue to fuel the other great crisis of our time: the climate emergency.

The economic crisis oil, gas and coal companies are facing is self-created. For years, they’ve ignored the warnings of scientists and economists and spent trillions of dollars on new fossil fuel production, instead of helping us transition to a clean energy future. They’ve engaged in greedy stock buybacks and taken on huge amounts of debt engaging in risky speculation. Don’t let them use the coronavirus as an excuse to paper over decades worth of lies and mismanagement.

I want you to support a just recovery that helps working families, not wealthy CEOs. That means opposing any attempts to bailout the fossil fuel industry, providing real, meaningful oversight over the Trump Slush Fund, and getting direct relief to those on the frontlines of this crisis.

I want you to support people, not polluters.

“I wanted to take a moment to thank all the frontline homeless service provider staff from our The Shower of Hope team to every outreach worker to case manager working with people experiencing homelessness. From LAHSA to PATH to frontline employees in every organization out there.

I know that most of you are in this because of your calling and not because of a career or money. I also know how most of you are pulling out of your own pockets and putting in your own time to get as much help to our homeless Angelenos as you can not just in this COVID-19 crisis but every single day.

You are literally keeping people alive and more importantly you are giving our most vulnerable Angelenos hope that they are not alone.

Thank you!” -Mel Tillekeratne
