Downers Grove Square Thrus is a dance community based in Downers Grove/Woodridge, IL. The club holds square dances on the 1st Friday of each month. The club also offers lessons starting in January and September of each year.

(I'm a terrible photographer. Trust me, the man behind the speaker is Bob Poyner!)

This was a Fox Valley Mixers Square Dance Club dance, but still worth talking about.

Yesterday 13 squares danced together and welcomed our newest class of graduates. We also welcomed an old friend-Bob Poyner-back to the area and helped celebrate his retirement from square dance calling. Congrats and thank you for all you've done for square dancing. His son, Bobby Poyner, is left to carry on his traditions in grand style.

New Dancers, and Anyone Who Wants to Improve Their Dancing:

Bobby Poyner is offering a series of workshops this summer. Speaking from personal experience, he does a great job with them. In these sessions, he'll workshop calls that give people trouble and calls that were taught toward the end of class (and for which we didn't get as much practice time). Bring your questions, practice, be ready to dance more confidently this fall.

And, please bring any left-hand dancers you happen to know or run into.

This is the last (for now?) of a series on being a better angel. I'd love to hear from you. What are your favorite tips for being a better angel? Pet peeves?

Being an angel doesn’t stop at the end of classes. Right now, our students are getting ready to attend their first dances (if they haven’t already), and some of them are nervous about it. I can help by asking whether the students I dance with are planning to attend dances I’ll be at. If it’s convenient, I might ask about carpooling. Or I might just say, “Can I have the first tip?”

This is part of a series on being a better angel. Since becoming an angel recently, I’ve been trying to learn to be the best angel I can be. I’ve thought about what worked when I was a student, talked to other students and angels, and looked online for tips. In this series, I share some of what I’ve learned.

Just the basics please! At a dance, flourishes can be a lot of fun. The extra claps, a twirl at the end of a promenade. But in class, I need to remember that I’m just confusing students by adding something our instructor isn’t teaching. And I’m in danger of convincing students that a flourish is an official part of a call, which could cause problems when they venture out into the larger square dance world.

This is part of a series on being a better angel. Since becoming an angel recently, I’ve been trying to learn to be the best angel I can be. I’ve thought about what worked when I was a student, talked to other students and angels, and looked online for tips. In this series, I share some of what I’ve learned.

I’m not just an angel in class. I’m also an angel at dances, and in every interaction I have with students, callers, other square dancers, and potential dancers. I want to represent square dance well and share my enthusiasm with everyone!
