The Troupe mourns the sudden loss of Mary Beth's beloved therapy dog, Bailey. They were a Pet Partner therapy dog team for the past nine years, working with children in "Read With Me" programs at many local schools and libraries. Mary Beth and Bailey were regulars at Argonne National Laboratory, where they some much-needed stress relief for staff. They also loved visiting with students at Wheaton College several times each year for the school's de-stress events. And Bailey's gentle demeanor was perfect for seniors at the Immanuel Residences in Downers Grove.

Here is what Mary Beth had to say about her beloved girl:

Three words, large enough to tip the world...I remember you.
-V.E. Schwab

And can it be that in a world so full and busy, the loss of one creature makes a void in any heart so wide and deep that nothing but the width and depth of vast eternity can fill it up.
-Charles Dickens

Yesterday we said goodbye to our sweet Bailey, after a short illness. Bailey was the dog who healed my heart after the untimely loss of Jesse James. She was a natural, intuitive therapy dog for nine years. It was my great honor to be her partner and to witness her gentle grace in action.

Bailey also loved butterflies, long walks, children of all ages, the sport of K9 nose work and her sister Molly, who is so lonely without her.

Bailey radiated light and joy. She was kind, patient, and always forgiving. I wanted more time together, but I am very grateful for what we had. I love you, Bailey, and always will.

PAWSitive Therapy Troupe April 2026 Members of the Month
Diane Carter and Chang

Diane and her Labrador Retriever, Chang have been a Pet Partner team since 2014. They began their therapy journey as members of the Community Partner group “PAWS 4 Patients”. When that group dissolved in 2022, Diane and Chang joined the PAWSitive Therapy Troupe. They have volunteered at many different locations over the past 11 years. They have brought smiles and comfort to patients and staff at MacNeal hospital in Berwyn. They have enjoyed working with young readers in the “Read With Me” programs at Oak Park, Forest Park, and River Forest Public libraries. And finally, Diane and Chang bring some much-needed stress relief to high school and college students during final exam weeks. They love seeing the students at Proviso Math and Science Academy in Forest Park, Dominican University and Concordia University of Chicago. Chang is a big favorite wherever she goes!

Here is what Diane has to say about Chang and her special gits as a therapy dog”

Chang has been special since she was born with a heart defect in 2013. I had been searching for a female black lab puppy, and she was the only one available in the area that summer. It seemed that it was meant to be that she would come home with us, in spite of her heart issues. We took her to a cardiologist immediately and understood that her life span might not be normal, but she was active, inquisitive, happy, and truly special from the beginning. We have had at least one black lab since we were married in 1972. A couple were puppies, but the rest were from Lab Rescue organizations, and a few became therapy dogs. I wanted to train one last puppy from the “beginning” and we adopted Chang when she was 8 weeks old. Although she slept soundly through her first puppy class, after that she was perky and attentive and picked up lessons quickly. She was a normal frisky puppy and was quick to learn the routine and accommodated to our household easily. She loved her big lab sisters, Sarah (a therapy dog) and Sadie. I should mention that her name, Chang, means elephant in the Thai language. My daughter is an archaeologist in Southeast Asia, and I became enamored of elephants when we visited there.

We started therapy visits shortly after she passed the Pet Partners test when she was just over a year old, and we joined our local pet therapy group, Paws 4 Patients. When that group disbanded in 2022, we joined Pawsitive Therapy Troupe. Our initial visits were to the school library where I was working at the time, and Chang came to love visits to all libraries. She seemed to know that she could rest on her blanket, and the children would pet her and read her favorite books (Elephant and Piggie), without judgement. We visited all kinds of classrooms, and students who were not used to being around dogs were able to become comfortable with her. It has also been meaningful to have parents and teachers remark that it helped their child gain confidence in oral reading by reading to Chang. For several years we visited a Breast Care Center weekly to provide comfort to ladies waiting for mammograms. Hospital visits, particularly to the staff, are another of our favorites. It makes me happy to know that just Chang’s presence can relieve stress and make someone’s day better. The more people she can greet the better! We also love to hear people say that she “made their day” particularly in the ICU and other high stress areas. Chang is always happy to greet any incidental visitors that she might encounter in the hallways. It lightens the mood for everyone.

Visits to college students during finals time is also a highlight. We love to hear about the pets that they are missing at home, and it brings comfort to have even a brief encounter with Chang. When she was younger, we loved to walk in our local July 4 parade. She was sure all those people along the parade route waving flags and cheering were there to admire and wave at her. As a senior dog, she still loves her hospital, school and library visits. She wags her happy tail and wiggles for everyone. I have been very fortunate to have her in my life and be able to share her with so many people.

On behalf of all of us in the PAWSitive Therapy Troupe, thank YOU, Diane and Chang, for your many years of devoted service!

PAWSitive Therapy Troupe Members of the Month
Ann Wolff and Myla

Ann and Myla have been dedicated members of the PAWSitive Therapy Troupe since 2022. They have volunteered at many different locations over the past three years. They have brought smiles and comfort to patients and staff alike at the Bernadin Cancer Center, Pediatrics, and multiple medical/ surgical inpatient units at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. With their Animal-Assisted Crisis Response training they have been called out for dozens of crises in the Chicago area, providing comfort and support for environmental disasters and human tragedies. Ann and Myla are a skilled, dedicated Pet Partner team and Ann’s extensive background in social work services makes her a wonderfully effective, empathetic therapy volunteer.

Here is what Ann has to say about her PAWSItive Therapy Troupe experiences:

“Myla came into my life as an adorable eight-week-old puppy, just as I was beginning my retirement and thinking about finding meaningful volunteer work to fill my days. With the help of a trainer, I started working with her and quickly discovered her incredible love for people—especially children. She has a beautiful way of looking right into someone’s eyes, simply asking to be petted. At the dog park, instead of playing with the other dogs, she would happily run from person to person soaking up attention. I was so proud when she passed her pet therapy evaluation at just one year old.
Some of our favorite places to visit are Pediatrics, the Cancer Center, and staff departments at Loyola University Health System. Myla’s tail wags nonstop during those visits as she confidently and joyfully approaches everyone she meets. We also spend a great deal of time visiting schools, which is especially meaningful to me since I work in one. The children adore her. They all know Myla, and she has a special gift for comforting a child who feels sad, frustrated, or overwhelmed.
As a school social worker and special education teacher, I realized after retiring full time that I still had more to give. I returned to work part time, and Myla was welcomed to join me once a month. During our school visits, we teach students about therapy dogs and even show off a few of her tricks. Together, we continue our visits at Loyola, local schools, and even crisis events.
One of our most memorable moments happened at Loyola Hospital. As we walked down a hallway, several staff members stopped to ask if they could pet Myla. Of course, I happily said yes. One staff member hung back and admitted she was afraid of dogs. I assured her that was perfectly fine—she didn’t have to pet Myla. Slowly, as others gathered around smiling and laughing, she inched closer. Before long, she reached out to pet Myla herself. She burst into laughter, jumped for joy, and said, “I am so happy that I did that!” It was a beautiful reminder that you never know when you—or your dog—might make a life-changing impact. Bringing smiles, easing worries, and helping people forget their troubles, even for a few moments, is what makes this volunteer work so incredibly meaningful. I truly love the work we do and the joy we can share wherever we go.”

On behalf of all of us in the PAWSitive Therapy Troupe, thank YOU Ann and Myla for your years of devoted service!

The Troupe mourns the loss of Bessie, Evan's beloved senior therapy dog. Although they just became a registered Pet Partner team this year, Bessie and Evan touched many hearts at senior homes and colleges in the area. Bessie was a gentle soul, and her bond with Evan was amazing. Bessie depended on Evan to be her ears, since she was almost totally deaf. But that did not stop her from connecting with people in her sweet, quiet way.

Here is what Evan had to say about his beloved Bessie:

I am writing to let you know that I had to put Bessie to sleep today. She started to suffer from a collapsing trachea and she was having difficulty breathing. There was no hope it would get better and progressed very quickly. I could tell she was tired, and it was her time to go. She had a great life, right up til the very end. My life isn't going to be the same without her.

I am so grateful to the PAWStive Therapy Troupe for allowing us to have one last round of adventures. It was a joy to be Bessie's human, and part of that joy was seeing how much happiness she brought to others. I can't thank you and the mentors enough. She really loved her therapy dog work. I wish we could have done more, but it just wasn't meant to be.

Troupe Member Mary Gawenda: In Memory

We deeply mourn the loss of our friend and fellow Troupe volunteer, Mary Gawenda last week, after a long battle with cancer. Mary spent many years as an oncology patient at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood IL. During her times at the infusion center, receiving chemotherapy, Mary met many of the Troupe therapy dogs, who were there on a weekly basis to make treatments a bit more bearable. She was so inspired by the difference that the therapy dogs made that she and her beloved greyhound, "Huns" became a therapy team in 2022. They were dedicated visitors at the Bernadin Cancer Center at Loyola for the past two years, until Mary's disease took its final toll. Mary inspired all of us with her courageous journey and her passion for helping her fellow cancer patients. Here is a note from Mary's family:

With heavy hearts, we share that our beloved Aunty Mary passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 26, 2025 with her loving sister, Beryl, and her beloved dog, Huns, by her side.
She was a constant source of love in our lives — someone who always made everyone feel seen and cared for. Her kindness, strength, and gentle spirit touched everyone who knew her, and her memory will forever be a part of us.
We are so grateful for the time we had with her and the kindness she always shared so freely. She will be deeply missed by all of us who were lucky enough to call her sister, aunt, godmother, dog mom and friend. Mary’s wishes were not to have a wake or a funeral. Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Mary was so proud of her beloved therapy dog Huns:

The Troupe mourns the loss of Ed's beloved therapy dog, Enzo. They were dedicated partners for many years at Hines Veterans hospital, MacNeal and Loyola hospitals, Oak Park schools, high schools and colleges, and Oak Park and River Forest libraries. They were also a registered AACR (Animal Assisted Crisis Response) team. Here is Ed's tribute to his beloved teammate:

Our beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog Enzo died yesterday, August 24th, from a fast growing cancer.

I loved being able to share Enzo and his affection with so many people during his six years as a therapy dog with the Pawsitive Therapy Troupe. His excitement at seeing me get his yellow Pet Partners vest out told me that he loved it as well.

Enzo visited many elementary schools, high schools and colleges over the years, some senior residences, and Loyola and Hines VA departments. His main visit was at MacNeal Hospital where he and his friend Chang Carter would often enter various units to hear squeals of "Enzo!" And "Chang!"

Enzo was a good traveler, and we loved bringing him wherever we went, including Vermont, Ontario, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to see friends and family who were kind enough to include him in their invitations.

His beauty and warmth made an impression on so many. To our knowledge at least two dogs and two baby boys were named "Enzo", in whole or in part after him.

Our house, and my heart, seem very empty today without him.

The Troupe mourns the loss of Rosemary's beloved Collie, Ella. Rosemary and Ella were an amazing therapy team at schools, senior homes and health care facilities. Here is Rosemary's tribute to her faithful partner:

I adopted Ella from a caring breeder who drove from Wisconsin to make sure she would work as a therapy dog, because the breeder knew this was Ella’s calling in her twilight years
Ella was endlessly patient with the people she visited, especially those who were not the most gentle at petting dogs. She was never disturbed by the loud peels of laughter and excitement that would accompany her arrival. Ella visited nursing homes, Hines VA, residential facilities for adults with multiple special needs, elementary schools, and special education transition centers. Even though they had personalities, Rudy (my other therapy dog ) and Ella were best buddies
At the age of 10 Ella suffered a stroke, but she did not suffer. I know she has somehow found my grandson Levi and is patiently following him around.
