African American Music Appreciation Month recognized by Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated

This month, we would also like to celebrate the voices, visionaries, and pioneers whose music has shaped culture, inspired movements, and left an undeniable mark on history.

As we honor African American Music Appreciation Month, we also recognize one of our own — Most Honorable Founder Webster Lewis - whose contributions to music, education, and the arts exemplified the excellence and achievement that define lota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.

From jazz and gospel to soul, hip-hop, R&B, and beyond, African American music continues to unite communities, tell our stories, and inspire our very own generations.

Today we honor and celebrate the birthday of the late Most Honorable Founder John Danton Slade. Founder Slade was born on this date in 1939 in Baltimore, Maryland to Eldon and Marie (Smith) Slade.

Founder Slade earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from Morgan State College in 1964, and his Master of Arts in sociology from the City University of New York in 1966.

During his career Founder, Slade taught at Howard University, Bowie State University, and Georgetown University, and was a guest lecturer at Stanford University, Morgan State College, and several other institutions of higher learning. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army and received numerous awards for his civic engagement. Founder Slade was the author of lota Phi Theta: The Founding and Ascendancy.
Founder Slade entered the Alpha lota Omega Memorial Chapter on May 6, 2018. His remains are interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

Today, we pause and recognize Most Honorable Founder Slade and pay homage to his legacy and the contributions he made to the brotherhood.
