We spent Monday re-sorting the meds and glasses and getting everything put away for the January project. We had time on Tuesday before our flight, so we were able to go to the Giraffe Center and out to lunch. It was nice to spend some time relaxing and feeding the giraffes! We flew out Tuesday night (Kenya time), and we have arrived in Boston. Emily is on her way to Rhode Island, and I am on the bus to Maine. Thank you for joining with us on this project. We left the team in Kisumu grateful, encouraged, and with lots of follow up to do in the coming days and weeks.

Our final clinic of the week was held in a large church building; again , glasses were outside under the shade of a few trees. We had 184 people come through to be seen by the doctors and nurses, tested for reading glasses and other eye concerns, and to receive their medications from the pharmacy. In the glasses department, the theme was repeated- people wanted glasses in order to be able to read the Bible- and the also wanted Bibles. In all this week, we were able to treat 1045 people among the Luo. On Sunday morning, Kenya time, we make our way back to Nairobi. Thank you for joining us with your support, your prayers, and your interest in what God is doing in Kenya.

On the way to today’s medical clinic, we passed by several large rice fields. Like the tea plantation, they seemed to go on and on. It was really quite beautiful to see. The Lord has blessed us with beautiful weather this week, though the doctors had a hot building today, with very few windows. However, this afternoon around 3-4 PM, the rain started. This time we got a heavy downpour. The local people are very grateful for the rain, because this is the planting season. Again, today, the people coming for reading glasses wanted to use a Bible as a testing tool. Their reason for getting glasses was to read the Bible. Many also asked if we had Bibles to give them (in the Luo language). The local team here is making very good progress toward finding people interested in hearing about the Lord.

We spent today doing a medical clinic in Mamboleo Obwolo Junction, where 200 people came to receive medical care. One of the things we test for is malaria. We found out that about 20% of the tests have come back positive. It’s nice to know that we could help those people. We have been received very warmly here, and many have told us that they are so thankful for the care they are receiving. Helping someone with a “felt” need is often the starting point to show them their need of a Savior. One of the biggest things that we have been able to witness over the last few days is the excitement on the face of somebody who can now see well enough to read where before they could not. And the most common thing they say is, “I cannot read my Bible because I cannot see it.” One older lady told us today that it has been so long that her Bible has been set aside because she cannot read it. She was so excited to go home with reading glasses and told us that now she can again read her Bible. More than one person, after being given the appropriate reading glasses, asked if we also give out Bibles. It’s something for us to think about when we have access to reading glasses and Bibles. Are we excited to take down the Bible and read it? After the clinic we had an opportunity to go see Lake Victoria. It was interesting to see the fishing boats and how they process the fish that they have caught that day.

Today was a beautiful day for the second clinic. We went to the village of Reru, and we set up inside a church, with the glasses station outside under a tree. We were able to treat 206 people, and we gave out 62 pairs of reading glasses. The local team was very encouraged by making 20 new contacts with whom to start building relationships. The easy flow of people today gave us time to talk to our translators and learn a little about their lives and their culture. I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside our Lifeway partners among the Luo people this week. Erokamana (thank you) for remembering us in your prayers.

We had our first medical clinic today and 226 people received care. 84 of them went home with reading glasses, and many had the opportunity to consult with an optometrist. The local team was very welcoming and eager to server their people. The pastor of the church where we held the clinic was thrilled to receive a soccer ball to use in ministry with the area children. Notice in the pictures there is a Luo Bible. It’s amazing when you consider that the Luo Bible, written in a language belonging to a people group most have never heard of, has the same words of encouragement, the same teaching, and the same plan of salvation that we see in our Bible. The church truly does extend far beyond the walls of our individual meeting places.

We left this morning to head to Kisumu, where we will conduct 5 days of medical clinics. Traffic is moving very slowly, making me thankful for a comfortable truck to ride in. We will be going through the Rift Valley, so it should be a pretty drive. We appreciate your prayers for health and safety, unity of the team, and a fruitful work among the Luo people.

The medical team arrived safely in Nairobi on Friday morning. All but one bag arrived, but it is supposed to be delivered sometime later today. We got all the meds sorted and ready to load on the truck. Today, Saturday, we have a relaxing day. We are having lunch with some missionary friends that we met on a project in Korr, Kenya in 2019. We will attend church on Sunday and travel to Kisumu on Monday. Thank you for praying for us.

The final day of medical camp was held in Aria today- off the main road and down a dirt path. When we arrived, there was no one there, but we had a small church building to use. The pastor was not there, because he was in Nairobi participating in the Frontline Theology Training, but his wife and several local team members were there. Very slowly, people came, until we had treated 162 people. The doctors had their stations inside the church, while all the rest found a place under the shade of a tree. The people there were very friendly and welcoming to us. We are headed back to Marsabit, where we will spend the night, and on Sunday morning we drive back to Nairobi. Thank you for all your prayers. A total of 908 people received a combination of medical care and reading glasses. Six people in the area were identified as persons of peace. The local team is ready now to follow up with the people there.
