HIDDEN GEM OF STEWART COUNTY: THE BISON OF LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES
Did you know you can see American bison right here in Stewart County? And you don't have to travel out West to experience them!
Tucked away in Land Between the Lakes, the South Bison Range offers visitors a chance to see these magnificent animals roaming in a natural grassland setting.
These aren't buffalo—they're American bison, and they have an incredible conservation story. Bison once roamed this region, disappeared from the area, and were later reintroduced as part of Land Between the Lakes' efforts to restore native wildlife and habitat.
WHERE TO GO:
Take Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway through Land Between the Lakes and keep your eyes open for the bison range near The Homeplace.
You never know what you'll see! Depending on the season, you may spot bison, wild turkeys, deer, birds of prey, butterflies and other wildlife along the way.
Bring your camera, take a scenic drive, enjoy the outdoors, and experience a piece of America's natural heritage.
And remember—these are wild animals. Give them plenty of space, never feed them, and enjoy watching them from a safe distance.
Whether you're a lifelong Stewart County resident or visiting for the first time, sometimes the best adventures are right in your own backyard.
