SeaBee Explorations Society God gave us a marvelous world full of things to examine, learn about, and take care of. A glass of water - simple enough. But is it making you sick? Why?

Let’s examine it together and maybe we can learn how to take care of it intelligently - for ourselves, for our families, and most importantly for our children. Another question - how about the air we’re breathing right this very minute – is it doing us more harm than good? Again, why? I have a lot of questions, as I am sure you do too – so together, let’s put a light to some of these things. God g

A positive note for a change, my friend Philippe Cousteau is on the job, and he, for one, is going to do everything he can (along with a lot of other people) to make sure our coral reefs don't disappear! And make no mistake, Philippe and his family (Jan, Alexandra, Jean-Michel, Nan, Fabien and Celine) are not without resources:

Our Voyacy Regen board meeting at Dr Dave's lab in Key West was a huge success. We have an amazing team of world leading individuals in science, business, media, and we are NOT going to let coral reefs dissappear.
Stay tuned for what's coming next year, big projects in Jordan, Europe, Carribean.

Hurricane Erin will be passing between Bermuda and New England tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday (08/22-23/2025).

Although Erin is currently only a Cat 2 Storm, some strengthening is expected. Erin is a massive storm with hurricane winds extending out 125 miles and tropical storm force winds reaching out 370 miles. This gives Erin a basic overall diameter of 740 miles. Which is a little more than the distance from Detroit, Michigan to either Birmingham, Alabama, or Atlanta Georgia. Closer (almost exactly) the distance between Detroit Michigan and Boston Massachusetts by car.

Erin is predicted to continue to move to the Northeast and away from the U.S. Atlantic Coast at 22mph, but will still remain a dangerous hurricane for the next couple of days and will cause life-threatening surf and rip currents through the New England Coastline and Bermuda. Waves of 13 feet and tidal surges of 20 feet are to be expected.

As can be seen in the below photo (courtesy NOAA GOES East), cloud cover is just now (02:00AM EDT) covering Cape Cod, Massachusetts and nearby Nantucket is beginning to experience tropical storm force winds. Caution is advised.

A check on current ocean heat in the Atlantic Basin shows we are very close to the record high ocean heat levels for the date that we saw a year ago. The Atlantic Basin sea surface as a whole is about 2 degrees C above average for the date with 90% of the Basin sea surface above average for the date. The Pacific Basin sea surface as a whole as well as the Indian Basin is also about 2 degrees C above average for the date but with about 85% of those basins’ sea surfaces above average for the date.

Note the sea surface temperatures above 90 degrees north and south latitudes are not shown. If they were they would be off the charts in the Arctic where by far the greatest global warming has occurred and the Arctic Ocean may be ice free in summer in a few years, much sooner than expected until recently.

La Niña is predicted to be over in about April (it is near over already) and a new El Niño may develop in the fall. In fact the sea surface temperature anomaly signature in the easternmost tropical east Pacific has already transitioned to an El Nino appearance. So ENSO will be in roughly the state it was last year although closer to El Niño conditions for the summer.

All this probably means we are likely to have an average to above average hurricane season this year with the potential for an early intense hurricane again like Beryl last year which was a record early Category 5 hurricane near Jamaica in early July.

Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the average peak activity date being September 10.

RECORD HEAT FLUX FORECAST TO ENTER ARCTIC

The extreme record setting mid latitude cyclone with a record cold bringing polar vortex that caused the blizzard on the U.S. Gulf Coast Tuesday and went on to strike the UK Friday night with the highest winds ever recorded in Ireland will be followed by a massive atmospheric heat flux that is forecast to enter the Arctic in one week that could raise temperatures to levels more than 30°C (54°F) higher for the date than the 1979-2000 average according to the latest GFS forecast. This event will likely cause sudden significant extremely early season ice melt in the Arctic Ocean.

Thwaites, the largest glacier in the world, is as of today disintegrating. It will probably be completely gone by about April. About 2,000 square km is disintegrating now or imminently - possibly within days - it’s about 1,000 m thick on average. Global sea level will be rising at least a few centimeters by April. After April, the then exposed West Antarctic Ice Sheet will likely begin calving massively. In the worst case if it all calves away then global sea level will rise 14 ft or about 5 m. It was thought until recently it would take 200 to 900 years for Thwaites to disintegrate. It’s happening before our eyes. Scientists have consistently underestimated the speed of ice melt at both poles.

There are enormous ramifications of this break up besides sea level rise. Global ocean circulation will begin to shift dramatically leading to a weaker AMOC circulation for example. This will lead to dramatic cooling of the climate in Europe leading to crop failures. Another impact is that the Southern Ocean will absorb far less carbon leading to accelerating atmospheric CO2 increases.

The latest ECMWF global model predicts global average atmospheric (surface) warming of + 2.5 degrees C this year (up from 1.5 degrees C now). This is because of the confluence of a number of important factors including a sunspot cycle peak in July, accelerating loss of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, and feedback loops like fewer clouds at non polar latitudes and methane eruptions from melting methane hydrates on the sea floor of the shallower parts of the warming Arctic Ocean around Siberia as well as terrestrial methane emissions from melting tundra in Siberia and other areas.

It is no concern of ours how you run your own planet.
But if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder!
Your choice is simple:
Join us and live in peace,
Or pursue your present course and face obliteration.
We shall be waiting for your answer.
The decision… rests with you.

Tonight Bonnie Truscott said, "Let's go out and see of we can see the comet". I was all for it, so out we went. We drove and drove looking for a suitable place to stop and look West, but nothing. The Bonnie prayed, "Lord, please show us a good place to stop to see Your comet". Not 10 seconds later we came to a clearing on the road, stopped and took this picture. God does it again! Thank You Lord!

For those of us who have been waiting for the last 11 YEARS for some decent Northern Lights (Auroras), tonight (Oct. 10-11, 2024) might just be our chance. Here's the official NOAA Warning:

"WARNING: Geomagnetic K-index of 7 or greater expected
Valid From: 2024 Oct 10 1541 UTC
Valid To: 2024 Oct 11 0600 UTC
Warning Condition: Onset
NOAA Scale: G3 or greater

Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 50 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude.
Induced Currents - Power system voltage irregularities possible, false alarms may be triggered on some protection devices.
Spacecraft - Systems may experience surface charging; increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites and orientation problems may occur.
Navigation - Intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems, including loss-of-lock and increased range error may occur.
Radio - HF (high frequency) radio may be intermittent.
Aurora - Aurora may be seen as low as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon".

What the above is saying is that The CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) launched by Tuesday's Solar X-flare has just reached Earth. It appears to be as potent as advertised. Solar wind speeds have jumped up to 497 miles/second, and a crack is opening in Earth's magnetic field. This is setting the stage for G3 to G4-class geomagnetic storms later today.

NOAA and NASA models both agree that the CME will strike our planet late on Oct. 10th. The impact could spark up to 12 hours of severe storming with naked-eye auroras visible in many US states and European countries. NOAA's detailed forecast has the storm crossing the boundary from Oct. 10th to Oct. 11th, involving both calendar dates.

Please note that auroras are not guaranteed. Sometimes even powerful CMEs fail to light up the night sky. It all depends on whether the CME connects magnetically to Earth. A strong connection can cause a great light show; a weak connection does the opposite. Fingers crossed for strong connections!
