Amazonia Forever: Guardians of the Green Heart - WAO2 Neutral Carbon Project within 800.000 hectares.
Background
The WAO2 Project is a comprehensive initiative in the Ecuadorian Amazon, designed to preserve 800,000 hectares of forest, home to the indigenous Waorani community. For centuries, the Waorani have been the guardians of this vast tropical forest, but today they face serious threats from deforestation, oil exploitation, and environmental degradation, which affect both their culture and way of life. This project spans until the year 2050 and aims to preserve not only the ecosystem but also the identity and traditions of this community.
Problem
The Waorani territory is under threat due to:
- Accelerated deforestation driven by destructive economic activities.
- Oil exploitation, which threatens the purity of rivers, soil, and wildlife.
- Cultural loss: External activities and modernization are eroding the Waorani鈥檚 ancestral knowledge and traditions.
Justification
Preserving 800,000 hectares of the Amazon is critical not only for Ecuador but for the entire world. This region plays a vital role in mitigating climate change by acting as a global carbon sink. Additionally, protecting the Waorani culture means conserving invaluable ancestral knowledge on the sustainable management of natural resources. The WAO2 Project aims to develop long-term solutions that combine environmental protection with the economic empowerment of local communities through sustainable tourism and other productive projects.
Benefits for Stakeholders
- Waorani Communities: Improved quality of life with access to clean water, renewable energy, healthcare, and education, while maintaining their cultural identity.
- International Donors: Participation in the fight against climate change, while contributing to biodiversity conservation and the preservation of an ancient culture.
- Global Community: The conservation of the Amazon reduces the carbon footprint, supports biodiversity, and protects one of the planet鈥檚 lungs.
Program Scope
The project covers multiple areas of intervention:
- Ecosystem restoration: Reforestation and protection of 800,000 hectares of forest.
- Sustainable tourism: Creation of eco-tourism routes with international certification.
- Basic services: Implementation of clean water systems, solar energy, and waste management.
- Dual education: Training the community in business skills, tourism, and sustainable resource management.
