The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting Americans to pray for the nation. Created in 1952 by Congress and signed into law by President Truman.
While officially established in 1952, the tradition of a National Day of Prayer goes back to the Continental Congress, with General George Washington observing a similar day of “fasting, humiliation, and prayer” in 1779.
Every president since 1952 has a signed a proclamation for the National Day of Prayer.
It is designed to be a non-partisan day where Americans of all faiths can gather to pray for unity and the country.
Last night our troop PA-2717 led a brief service of prayer at the Dover Fire House and had a flag lowering ceremony.
