Six years later, and people still struggle to treat Black death with the seriousness it deserves.
This past month, jokes about George Floyd during a celebrity roast reminded us how quickly this country turns pain into entertainment. A man was murdered in front of the world. His final breaths became a meme, a punchline, and content for applause.
That is exactly why Black Lives Matter chapters, and now BLM NH, were formed.
We were formed because too many people wanted to “move on” instead of confronting the truth. Because Black grief is too often dismissed while racism gets repackaged as humor, controversy, or politics. Because demanding humanity for Black people is still treated like an overreaction instead of the bare minimum.
George Floyd’s murder forced the world to pay attention. But attention without accountability changes nothing.
Six years later, we still carry the responsibility to organize, educate, protect our communities, and fight for a world where Black lives are valued in life, not just mourned in death.
We will continue to say his name.
We will continue to do the work.
And we will never apologize for demanding justice.
