It’s back to school again

As students, parents and teachers are all gearing up for the start of another school year, it is a good time to remember to keep an eye out for students walking to and from school and students getting on and off school buses. Most schools begin classes next week, although some begin as early as this Wednesday.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, school buses are generally one of the safest vehicles on the road; however, the risk is greatest when children are approaching or leaving a school bus.

Keep in mind these simple rules:

A school bus’s flashing yellow lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop, meaning drivers should slow down.
Red flashing lights mean stop. Students are getting on or off the school bus. Stay stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn and the bus begins moving.
Be ready to stop for school buses as they stop frequently.
Watch and stop for children who cross in front of the bus when the bus is stopped.
Be aware that school buses stop at all railroad crossings as required by law.

Best wishes for a great school year!

IMPORTANT!
The Bureau of Motor Vehicles now visits our region every month - the FIRST AND THIRD WEDNESDAYS - from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. They will be at the PACC - Piscataquis Area Community Center - on Park Street in Dover-Foxcroft (the former YMCA building).

While they create the opportunity for appointments - please plan to get there early so that you can get your business done. Right now, it is first come, first served.

Please plan to visit with us on FRIDAY, April 14th starting at 10:00 a.m. at Central Hall Commons for our annual EXPO featuring 26 programs and services available to area residents who are aging in our Maine Highlands area! Guests will have a chance to meet area providers, obtain information about a variety of local programs and services available to support those of us aging in the region or for those who are caring for those who are aging, or for folks "thinking ahead" about how to stay safe and comfortable in their homes! This event is FREE - open from 10-12 on FRIDAY, APRIL 24TH - followed by luncheon and our great keynote speaker, JESS MAURER, from the Maine Council on Aging!
