Fighter practice update: today's practice in Villa Rica has been canceled. A couple of people have expressed interest in getting together at the park at the usual time, but there will not be an official practice.

Another option for those wishing to practice today is to join our neighbors in The Barony of South Downs, SCA (the Atlanta based SCA group) for their practice today. They start at noon in Dunwoody, GA. More information can be found here:

Depedale's archers had a great archery and thrown weapons practice today in Villa Rica, along with friends from several other area groups. Thank you to everyone who came out!

Another great class yesterday at the Lithia Springs Library. Our teacher, Jan Morris, gave us a great review of herbal drinks in the middle ages. There were even samples!

Next month's class will be on Greek Theater. Join us Saturday, June 7th for a look into the very beginnings of theater, what motivated the Greeks, and what themes were common at the time.

Happy New Year!

Looking to get your fill of feasting, fighting, arts, history, historical fashion, and more in the new year? January has a fabulous line up of events to make that happen.

12th Night
January 4th in Athens, GA- The Barony of Bryn Madoc presents a day of fencing, fighting, thrown weapons, dance, live music, and classes. The event will feature two Arts and Sciences competitions — Stella Nova, for those new to entering A&S contests, and Dreamers Moot, a regional A&S event. The Caga Tió de Nadal (candy-filled log) will be returning this year, with a scheduled time slot for children during the day and adults after feast.

Panhandle Skirmishes
January 10-12th in Alford, FL- Find your way to the battlefield for a day of fighting, including rapier and rattan scenarios, as well as combat archery and seige weapons. After the rivalry, stay for the revelry! After the fighting field closes for the evening, there will be a potluck feast.

January 24-26th in Atalla, AL- Ready to learn some new tricks to improve your fighting game? If you're into rapier or rattan, this event is for you with a selection of combat oriented classes followed by a Roman themed feast.

Midwinter A&S
February 1st in McDonough, GA- This one is technically not January, but it's certainly close enough to start planning for it. Looking to notably increase the amount of historical performing arts in your life, even if only for one day? This event will feature an assortment, including a Poet Laureate competition, Kathak dancing, and commedia dell’arte, in additional to a regional arts and sciences faire, classes, and salons.

Last weekend, Depedale's own Baroness Juliana of Empingham traveled to the Kingdom of Gleann Abhann (Mississippi, western Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana) to cook a an early medieval Scandinavian feast at their Christmas Revel event. While she was there, she also participated in their arts and sciences competition with an art piece based on a page from the Book of Kells. She was named Baronial A&S Champion! Way to go, Juliana!

The Shire of Depedale is the local branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) for Douglas County and Carroll County, GA. But what is the SCA?

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international non-profit volunteer educational organization. The SCA is devoted to the research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat, culture, and employing knowledge of history to enrich the lives of participants through events, demonstrations, and other educational presentations and activities.

Members of the SCA study and take part in a variety of activities, including combat, archery, equestrian activities, costuming, cooking, metalwork, woodworking, music, dance, calligraphy, fiber arts, and much more. If it was done in the Middle Ages or Renaissance, odds are you’ll find someone in the SCA interested in recreating it.

It's not quite December yet, but it's time to make plans for December events! There is fighting, feasting, arts, and more to be had.

Magna Faire - Dec. 7th in Cullman, AL
Join us for a day celebrating the arts. You can enter a project in the Magna Faire or the A&S Regional and attend classes. Rapier and heavy fighters can take part in the Toys for Tots charity tournament, the Sword and Mistletoe Tournament, and the popular Iron Mountain Baronage Rapier Tournament. End the day with a sumptious German feast. Site opens Saturday at 8 am central and closes at 9 pm central.

Christmas Revel - Dec. 6-8th in Lumberton, MS
While this event is a bit further away, it will feature a Viking Age Norse inspired feast prepared by Depedale's own Baroness Juliana of Empingham. There will be classes, fighting, archery, and more. Papa Noel, Mrs. Clause, Mr. & Mrs. Krampus will be making an appearance.
