We went to our wellness vet visit today! After a thorough exam, some IV fluids, a nail trim, and a few prescription meds/antibiotics/food later, I am beyond happy to say that our sweet (confirmed) girl "Mable" is healthy other than some (hopefully minor) GI stasis. This can be an extremely dangerous condition for rabbits, often resulting in death if untreated, or treated too late. In Mable's case, this was likely caused by the stress she was under being abandoned in the wild, as well as probably having a poor diet leading up to it.
The first 24 hours were scary, as she was barely eating or drinking, had only urinated once, and had no poops (which every bunny owner knows is impossible!). Despite this, she was alert, friendly, and even hopping around the room I have her quarantined in, which gave me hope she'd be ok. Even though we had our vet appointment today, as a precautionary, last night I administered her water via syringe and massaged her belly for about 45 minutes. Thank heavens this morning there was finally about 15 tiny dry poops and some urine!πŸ™ŒπŸ» The vet confirmed my suspicions, and made a quick treatment plan to hopefully resolve this poor baby's pain, and get her digestive tract back in track!
We spoke a while about how crazy it is that someone would ever abandon such a sweet creature, and ways that I could try and go about tracking down an owner (if she is truly lost). In an effort to give people the benefit of the doubt, I called both the local SPCA and police department where she was found, and neither reported any "missing rabbit" reports. They took my information just in case.
Sadly, I think this was a true case of abandonment😭 πŸ’”
Despite this buns sad history, I am committed to giving her all the love in the world, and all the belly massages she needs to get better❀ I've talked to a few people now, and it all seems too good to be true that Mable and I found our way to eachother. Then today, the vet said to me on the way out, (regarding finding a potential owner) "Either way, I hope she stays with you. It seems meant to be." ❀πŸ₯°πŸ€—πŸ‡
I cannot wait to introduce Mable to the residents once she is through recovery and in tip-top bun shape!
