I heard a story once, about a crazy construction worker that found just how real Jesus is. This guy wasn’t a very nice person back in the day. Making lots of money was all he was concerned about even though he never did. Then one day something happened. Something that scared him to the core. The Lord used a total stranger to speak to him and call him into ministry. The stranger had no idea that just sharing his own story would be what the Lord would use to speak to this mess of a construction worker but those words he spoke changed that man’s life forever. He said “When I was a young man God called me into ministry but I was a lover of money.” Then He quoted Jesus himself “You can’t serve God and money!” Now the crazy thing was, three days before, this construction worker had come home from work and was just done…. Done with everything… Completely burnt out.. He sat down and started reading his Bible which was completely unusual for him to do. He read chapter after chapter until he got to the verse in Matthew where Jesus says “You can’t serve God and money”. He knew then that God was speaking to him and then three days later to have someone stand in front of him and look him right in the face and quote him the same thing again, ohh it was time to start listening. Listen he did and the Lord continued to “speak” and show him things in even more crazy ways than you would probably believe.
Several years later this man realizes that the Lord has called him to full time ministry and even though that isn’t really what he wanted to do he listened, and answered the call. He quit his job, packed up his family in a tiny little camper and went to help people who had lost everything after a tornado. Friends and family thought he had lost his mind. How are you going to pay your bills without a job? How are you going to live in a tiny camper? You’re going to run out of money in a few months…. He knew what they were saying made perfect sense. It’s what he would have said a few years earlier. But he had seen God’s power. He understood how real God is and that He is in control. He understood that when the God of heaven and earth, who created the earth and everything in it, who sent His son to die on a cross to pay for his sins, when God tells you to do something you had better just do it. So he did….
That first year was tough. Seemed like every month they didn’t know where next months bills would come from but the money was always there on time. The Lord continued to “speak” and show him that he was on the right track in many different ways. They traveled all over the country helping people after storms but more importantly opening doors so that people can meet Jesus like he did. Their faith and trust in the Lord grew and the Lord blessed them greatly as they continued to travel and serve for years to come. What seemed impossible at the beginning proved to be successful and the man found happiness greater than he ever thought was possible. Not because of anything the man did but because he simply decided, I’m going to follow Jesus, and give Him everything I have….
