Did you know: Intimate partner violence alone affects more than 12 million people every year.

Although emergency support services for domestic violence survivors exist, financial insecurity still significantly limits one’s ability to escape an abusive partner.

Flexible financial assistance is a critical resource that can support survivors and their children as they seek safety and establish long-term independence. At the Bridge Project, we support low-income moms with unrestricted, direct cash payments because we believe that economic stability and both physical and psychological well-being go hand in hand—and are key to empowering thriving families.

Earlier this year, we partnered with Megi Health (megi.health) to offer the Bridge community an opportunity to recognize high-risk conditions during pregnancy and postpartum.

32 Bridge Project community members engaged with Megi Health’s High-Risk Doula Certification, learning critical skills to identify early warning signs of the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP)—the leading cause of preventable maternal death in the U.S.

Across the training’s total cohort, blood pressure recognition jumped from 42.6% → 99.3%, and 92.8% of enrollees reached expert-level HDP proficiency.

In addition to supporting low-income families with unrestricted cash, we connect moms to optional educational resources, helping them build new skills and career opportunities!

We’re still thinking about our Advocacy Day at the Wisconsin State Capitol! Our fellows spoke directly with state leaders about guaranteed income, caregiving support, and investing in Wisconsin families.

We’re especially grateful to Dr. Michelle Robinson for her leadership throughout the fellowship, helping our fellows build the skills to be leaders in their own communities.

Thank you to staff member Angela Li for sharing your reflection.

Maternal health is determined by more than just individual effort. Structural systems also shape health outcomes, leaving families burdened by systemic inequities at a much higher risk for pregnancy complications.

New research from the University of Texas at El Paso shows that when mothers experience chronic stressors, such as socioeconomic insecurity or exposure to stressful and traumatic life events, their emotional distress can contribute to preeclampsia symptoms. This data highlights the severe impact of systemic stress on pregnant individuals, highlighting the critical need for in-depth interventions.

Crucially, our latest maternal health study reveals that financial security and health are deeply connected. Data from 1,372 low-income pregnant individuals across four of our program locations shows that the Bridge Project’s cash transfer approach can drive key improvements in maternal and infant health among economically-disadvantaged families.

Financial breathing room matters. By reducing economic pressure, unrestricted cash supports parents during a vulnerable window.

No parent should be forced to make sacrifices that sideline their child’s wellbeing. At the Bridge Project, we support families with unconditional cash because we believe all babies should have what they need to thrive.

Keilyn Borrero, a Milwaukee Bridge mom, writes in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel how unconditional cash intervention changed her life. As her family grew, she faced new challenges with transportation and work, and direct cash gave her the stability to decide what was best for her family.

Keilyn is also part of the Bridge Project’s Advocacy Fellowship, a nine-month leadership and advocacy development program developed in partnership with Dr. Michelle Robinson and designed to equip Bridge Project moms with the skills they need to advocate for their communities through various levels of civic engagement.

We’re thankful to have recently received additional funding from the Zilber Family Foundation and ARPA funding from the City of Milwaukee to support additional families in Milwaukee.

At a time when many mothers are struggling to bridge the economic gap, we are honored to have been part of Keilyn’s journey.
