We had an amazing time during our visit with the Double Springs Elementary 1st grade students and teachers! They stopped by on their field trip around the community a couple of weeks ago.

Mrs. Tucker enjoyed sharing about some of the amazing natural treasures right here “in our backyard” — from the beautiful Sipsey Wilderness to unique species like the Flattened Musk Turtle and the Black Warrior Waterdog. Students also learned about our special part of the “world” while practicing map skills and exploring where we live within our country, state, county, and region.

It was a wonderful visit, and we were so impressed by how much these students already knew! Thank you for allowing us to be part of such a fun and educational day. The future of conservation is bright with students like these! 🌎🐢💧

Northwest Alabama RC&D Council is an amazing partner in the region and has provided funding to support our volunteer training programs and trail maintenance efforts! We appreciated the opportunity to not only share how the funding provided has been used and impacted our public lands, but also the opportunity to share more about Wild Alabama and our mission to inspire people to Enjoy, Value, & Protect the wild places of Alabama!

We hope to see you on the trail!

Such a treat running into THE Rick "Trail Boss" Cranford and Tucker at Pink E Burns this morning who offered to join me "Wet Beans", and James "Not-Ready" as we sling bladed, lopped, and brushed ~ mile 144 to ~ mile 145 on the Pinhoti in Dugger Mountain Wilderness. While we did get lots done, talking about UFOs, cryptids, and the state of the world was the highlight 😅
Thank you two for coming and lending a hand in getting the overgrowth in check!

Thanks to our Certified Trails Technician, Morgan Wilson for talking us through the purpose for some of our recent trail work! Wild Alabama Staff and Volunteers help to maintain the Sipsey Wilderness Trails inside the Bankhead National Forest. With 52 miles of Sanctioned, numbered hiking trails, one flash flood can easily destroy many sections of several trails. We work to either build the section of trail back to the way it was, or we create a reroute that is more safe and sustainable. We always work to prevent further erosion, so usually the reroute is done further from the creek than the original path.
If you are interested in helping with any of these trail projects, email [email protected], or [email protected]. We would love for you to join us in the forest!

Mountain laurel appreciation hike on the Pinhoti Trail this morning was oh so lovely! With bird migration in full swing, mild weather, mountain views, and flowers blooming everywhere, we had a really really nice time! Not to mention rich conversation among new friends, the joy of youngsters frolicking around, and tasty snacks we brought along!
