80 years ago, today, 6-6-44, American soldiers stormed Omaha Beach in Operation Overlord under the command Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. It turned the tide of WW2 and the defeat of N**i Germany and its megalomaniac leader, Adolf Hi**er
Omaha beach was unlike any of the other assault beaches in Normandy. Its crescent curve and unusual assortment of bluffs, cliffs and draws were immediately recognizable from the sea. It was the most defensible beach chosen for D-Day. That means it was most heavily fortified by the German and where most of the landing force (American soldiers) would be slaughtered. In fact, many planners did not believe it a likely place for a major landing. The estimated total battle casualties for the United States were 135,000, including 29,000 killed and 106,000 wounded and missing.
Remembering D-Day 6-6-44
Here’s my D-Day (6-6-44, 80 years ago next week) / Memorial Day poems.
Barefoot Warrior
Nameless, shoeless,
The boy from Nebraska
“Unknown Soldier”
Body obliterated
By German shells
After eighty years
Finally makes it to Omaha
Not home
But journey’s end
Now, the waves are just that
No bodies, no blood.
Barefoot, he walks along the
Golden strand
The scarlet blots
Long since rinsed by the tides
He walks
Past tourists who
Come to reflect
Locals who
Come to play
He came with
Purpose
Not of his making
To stop the
Megalomaniac
“Died with honor”
Slaughtered.
Under
The Overlord.
