Kiwanis Club of Dothan

Kiwanis Club of Dothan Kiwanis Club is a great asset to the Dothan community!

A family of servant leaders: Kiwanis Clubs focus on changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time. To do this, many clubs also sponsor a Kiwanis family club—K-Kids for primary school children; Builders Clubs for adolescents; Key Clubs for teens; CKI clubs university students and Aktion Clubs for adults living with disabilities—to reach more people and have a greater service impact on their communities.

Today, June 10, 2026, our speaker was local attorney, Ben Irwin. Attending with him were a couple of interns along with two members of his staff. He reminded us that everyone has their own story, point of view, and assumptions about any given topic. We should be willing to put ourselves in others shoes in order to understand where they are coming from and be open to their point of view. Ben talked about the Kiwanis impact on the children we serve. He said, “People will never forget what you do for them!” This is so true. We hear stories from adults about remembering when Kiwanis read to them when they were a child at Head Start or Kiwanis gave them a scholarship that enabled them to go to college!
Thank you, Ben, for motivating us today!

Our RIF (Reading is Fundamental) books have arrived. We are getting them organized and ready for next year! We are going to video a Kiwanis member reading them and add a QR code inside the books. Teachers and parents can then access the video and have us read their book to the kids whenever they want!

She talked about after school programs called “Good News” clubs where her organization brings the gospel to children that don’t attend church. At this time they are working with four organizations in the Wiregrass and looking to expand.
Kelley is currently active in the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery.

On May 6, 2026 our guest speaker was Mike Doherty of Farley Nuclear Plant. He spoke of the many safety practices, training, and gear in place at Farley that ensures us that they are putting safety first! He had drawings that demonstrated how water is taken from the river and used to generate power. When the water is returned to the river, it’s cleaner than when it was removed! One interesting fact: Farley is the largest nuclear plant in the US!
