In 1997, with the help of dedicated volunteers, the DABG Rose Garden was established. 🌹 It was the first garden developed at the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens, which has now grown to contain over 26 garden collections. Today, the Rose Garden contains 300 plus roses and is maintained by the Wiregrass Rose Society. The center beds contain modern roses, mostly hybrid tea, floribunda, or grandiflora, while the outer beds hold antique and climbing roses. The central focal point being the Gloria Fischer Memorial Fountain which was dedicated in 2000. The DABG Rose Garden peaks in May, and after a brief rest during the heat of the summer, bursts forth again in the fall. 😍

The DABG Rose Garden is a popular location for pictures, making wishes, and taking in the beauty of spring. πŸ“Έ Most of the Rose Garden is already starting to flush out, featuring stunning varieties like 'Gold Medal' ( #2) and 'Moonstone' ( #3). Come stroll through the DABG Rose Garden on your next visit and make a wish at the fountain! 🌹πŸͺ™

πŸ¦‹ Wednesday Wonders πŸ¦‹

Visit the DABG Wings of Wonder Butterfly House and get an up-close encounter with a butterfly friend! πŸ‘€πŸŒΈ All visitors to the butterfly house are given a medical swab soaked with a sugar water solution. The sugar water solution mimics the nectar butterflies rely on from flowers as their primary food source. Since touching butterflies with your hands is highly discouraged, this option allows guests to view butterflies up close without endangering a butterfly's health.

The butterfly house contains 400-500 native butterflies and is open to Garden guests from April thru October. Several caterpillar rearing exhibits are located in the atrium where guests can observe caterpillars feedings on their native host plant. πŸ›

πŸ“ Garden entry is through the Ralph & Carolyn Smith Botanical Center where admission fees are collected. Tickets to the "Wings of Wonder" are only $3 each and are available at the admission desk. The Dothan Area Botanical Garden is located at 5130 Headland Ave. in Dothan. The pet-friendly (must be on leash) facility is open from 9:00am-6pm seven days a week. Butterfly House hours are 10am-4pm. For more information, please contact the Garden office 334-793-3224 or visit www.dabg.com.

Mock Orange can grow 6 to 8 feet in height and up to 6 feet wide.

Our Amaryllis Garden is in full bloom! 🌷 Located on the western side of the Gardens' ground and next to the Daylily Garden, the Amaryllis Garden is one of our newer additions to DABG. Amaryllises, Hippeastrum, are traditionally used as holiday gifts and are known for their large, brightly colored flowers. In Alabama, amaryllises grown outdoors bloom in late spring, generally from April through May. The Amaryllis Garden boasts of a diverse variety of these bulbs including 'Dancing Queen' ( #2), 'Flaming Peacock' ( #3), and 'Rosetta Symphony' ( #4). Stop by the Amaryllis Garden on your next visit before these blooms disappear for the season! 🌺

✨ Volunteer Spotlight ✨

On March 24, 2026, members of the Alabama Power Service Organization - Southeast Division volunteered at the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens for a day of service. APSO includes volunteers from the Alabama Power company, as well as Alabama-based employees of Southern Company, Southern Nuclear and Southern Linc. This organization empowers the volunteers to take part in projects that benefit a host of nonprofits and community organizations.

These incredible volunteers of APSO assisted DABG staff with preparations for this year's plant sale. From organizing and pricing plants, to moving these plants on pallets to later be moved to the sale area, this group knocked it out of the park! The day's work was completed in record time! Thank you for getting involved in the Wiregrass Community. πŸ’šβ˜€οΈ

We invite all those interested in volunteering at Dothan Area Botanical Gardens to join our new Facebook group, DABG Volunteers, to get connected. βœ… If you have not already completed a volunteer interest form and are looking to get involved, do let us know! ☎️

Kelly Tate (Right) of Cottondale, FL., and her grandchildren, Jaycob Hitchcock (Left) and Jamie Hitchcock (Middle), were the lucky winners of the recent Easter basket give-away at the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens! 🐰🧺 This year's basket was donated by Bo & Martha Thagard. Over 600 visitors cast ballots their year for their favorite wooden egg during β€œEgg Quest” at the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens. Each of the 25 wooden eggs on display were decorated and submitted by area schools and local artists. 🎨 Thank you to each visitor who came to see this year's display and voted. We hope everyone had a happy Easter! β˜€οΈ

🌸 Floral Friday 🌸

Something big (and stinky!) is in bloom! πŸ‘ƒπŸŒΏ Konjac, Amorphophallus konjac, is a perennial native to warm subtropical to tropical areas of eastern Asia. Also known as the Voodoo lily, it is generally grown for its interesting foliage. Each plant produces a single leaf from a subterranean tuber. The fleshy leaf stalk has a mottled pinkish-grey and olive green appearance. The leaf dies back after one growing season in the late summer or fall.

πŸ•°οΈ This plant only blooms once every 3-5 years after its underground corm reaches the size of a baseball. The large, purple, showy flower appears in the spring and lasts for just 3-4 days. When fully open, the spadix heats up and emits an odor of rotten flesh that attracts carrion flies and midges. Think Titan Arum (aka "Co**se Flower") but on a smaller scale. These insects pollinate the flower and the smell disappears once the flowers have been pollinated.

The Voodoo lily can be grown in an Asian-themed or sensory garden. It can make as an interesting greenhouse subject or houseplant. Just remember to move it outdoors when a flower appears! Konjac grows best in rich growing medium and in partial sun. It prefers consistent moisture and can tolerate standing in water.

πŸ“ Here at Dothan Area Botanical Garden, the Voodoo lily is currently on display in the located in the Coleman Tropical House, directly before the Demonstration Flower Garden.
